2019 College Basketball Coaching Carousel

I agree with folks here. I don’t know where we stand anymore than I did before.

I think we did a good job of discussing the national field of candidates. But “tier of his own” Wes Miller is nowhere to be found. A quick Google news search shows his only mentions since their season ended was some random speculation about VT as a safe option along with Odom on only one site and in a list of UNC alums who could replace Roy although considered a job away.

Well that just can’t be! We’ve been assured that programs near and far are banging down doors to hire Wes.

Barnes may be playing UCLA to get more money out of Tennessee. Guess we'll see soon.

You're probably right, but we will never know and that sucks.

I think Prohm and Hoiberg definitely make the same decisions. Musselman likely picks Arkansas over us, but maybe we could have locked him up before Arkansas offered. Oats picking Wake over Alabama would have been a coin toss at best. But like you say, we will never know for sure.

Pretty good basketball mind. But can he recruit the kind of player needed to be successful in the ACC? Apparently, both Ryan Odom and Willard said “ no thanks.”

To be honest I have a feeling Dave Jr is waiting on a call. It would be so wake....

This just seems like a terrible hire for VT. I can’t get over it.

5 years / $12 mil somehow seems like too much money (especially when compared to his Wofford salary).

I don’t see how he’ll be able to recruit enough talent to win at VT.

The Buzz years are going to look like an anomaly.

Mike Young to VT seems a lot like Larranaga to Miami awhile back. Older coach, been at a mid-major for a long time with solid seasons and some recent breakthrough success.

The VT hire really helps put things into perspective on the caliber of basketball coach that we can expect for Wake to hire next.

So Wake? Our last three hires were Prosser, Bz and Manning. All had nothing to do with Wake. We failed for 20+. How is hiring someone with connections so Wake?

The last dude we hired was Odom who had been here. Guy accomplished more in 95 and 96 alone than we have since all
combined.

Larranaga was in a better league and made the Final Four.

The “Welcome Home” thing seems awkward. He didn’t go to Tech, right? He’s just from the area many decades ago? Sounds like they’re trying to justify an otherwise bland hire (ya think). That plus the photo make it look like they’re acknowledging, “He’s come back home to quietly drift off into the sunset and retire.”

*Not before notching a number of wins over Manning first, of course.

I disagree. VT is and always will be a football school, unlike wake. They do not have nearly the hoops history of wake and I believe being part of the big 3-1/2 is enticing to prospective coaches

Making it a true big four should be part of the early goals.

However, such things are not necessarily forever. Just look at the former ""big five" in Philly. It is now a big one (Villanova) with four other teams who are pretty much mid-majors (Temple, LaSalle, St. Joseph, Penn).

Wake has a much better chance of recovering because they are in the same conference as the other three.

Somebody call Tim Duncan !

Babcock's other major hires at VT have been solid. Young is not an alum, just a native of the area. His cousin is the AD at Radford. Is it a home run hire on the level of Williams? No, but the COY award is impressive. Hiring someone who will be less likely to start looking around after a few years is a plus. The Hokies are losing at least 4 of their top 6 players from this year so his ability to recruit will be tested early. Getting Harris back on board would be huge.
