OFFICIAL Utah State Game Thread

Hinton could not have been more clutch. What an asset to this team.

Clawson said it right. Not sure we deserved to win. The offense can score but struggled big time in short yardage today. The defense still susceptible to big plays. But a win is a win and I take this one all day.

My gosh, what a game.
I am emotionally exhausted.
What a great clutch win.

And the final score is ultimately Wake -3. Vegas is too good.

Really inexcusable decision by Love there (which I’m ecstatic about). First down in field goal range. Can’t believe it.

Well, that was amazing. Not sure I've ever seen a seesaw game quite like that before. Agree with Clawson: we weren't really all that good, but just good enough. Congrats Deacs!

Agree with clawson, but a lot of that is on play calling. They owned the line, so don’t run it over and over in short yardage. Our WRs were dominating their CBs, particularly on the outside, yet we went away from those throws midway through the 4th. We should have kept throwing until Newman’s arm fell off.

And also, that was about as entertaining a game as you’ll get for a neutral fan watching a game with two unranked teams with no football pedigree.

When a defense gives up 35 points and 596 yards it would be inaccurate to say they played well. For the final 13:51 of the game the D surrendered 97 yards on 21 plays but the final four USU series ended punt, punt, punt and interception. That's stepping up with the game on the line.

Hail, Seniors! Washington, Claude, Carney and Hilton. Henderson with a pick and Gilliam fighting off an early injury. Newman for 401 and "Que Surratt, Surratt" saving the day at the end. We'll only get better.

This 1000 per cent! It was clear that our OL could not move them off the ball---so fake it and roll out or fake it and throw to your receivers who are having a field day! Just plain stubborn on Clawson's part. Newman saved his ass

Just got back from the game, where I had the privilege of sitting a few rows behind Danny Mannequin and staff. I give Danny credit though, all the assistants left around halftime and Danny stayed the whole game.

Impressions:

Offense looks good. Only 2 issues I saw were the O-Line needs to get a little better at winning their matchups consistently, and second the slow developing run plays with a read between Carney and Newman aren't working. Defenses have too much time to react because those guys aren't turning the ball upfield quickly and making guys miss. Beal-Smith does better with it because he just goes and doesn't wait for the defense to come to him.

Defense looks mostly bad. I don't see much of a change from the defense that lost a lot of games last year. If not for the interceptions thrown by Love the defense would have lost this game despite the good offense Newman & Co. provided. Love seemed overrated to me as he missed some throws and threw some bad picks too. Wake DBs miss tackles, give up huge plays, and can't get off their blocks on runs. D-Line was not really disruptive, not getting into the backfield often. Linebackers were the strength of the unit, if you can call part of the unit strong. Overall defense needs a lot of work if this is going to be a special season.
