Basham, Surratt, Hartman and Kern return

The problem with this argument is that the vast majority of players transfer because they weren’t getting playing time. The other big slice actually do move up a tier. So a grad transfer b-ball player like Johnson transferring from Northern Arizona to the ACC is legitimately a step up. It’s an LOWF attitude to say that Georgia and Wake aren’t the same tier. We are both schools in a P5 conference. He was the starting QB so it’s not about PT either. In addition, it is on record that they will be running more of an RPO style with him so that’s not it either.

No matter how many times OGB has tried to put words in my mouth. I'm not saying that. If you look, I've said it's Jamie and his family's decision. He's lived up to his agreement with Wake.

Our PTO is completely different than anyone's. This is undeniable.

Many here talk about loyalty, but have none unless it fits nicely into their own selfish definition.

What was the "agreement".

At the end of the day, I think Clawson is perfectly happy that Newman is gone; not that he had any issues with Newman as the starter, but now he has a clear-cut, no distractions (and I would add comfortable/confident) view for the next 2 years of who will be running his offense. The old saying that "if you have two QB's, you ain't got a QB" can apply here.

While I don’t agree with this at all, it’s actually the next *three* years of QB play, which is kindof exciting. If Hartman gets passed not due to injury, that’s an even better situation.

NC State wasn't in the last 5 games. In those games he was over 50% one time. It could have been injuries or wide receiver situation but he was not good as last five games. He was terrible against both Syracuse and Michigan State.

Oh boy

I roasted Tyler in this exchange and you didn't include it. Come on. Haha

Evidently the agreement was to work hard to get better and if you are good enough to have value on the open market as a senior, leave the team to better your prospects.

Not sure why Clawson made such an agreement. It must be so since I cannot fathom RJ being wrong.

The agreement is four years. That’s also when Clawson tells a player it would be best for him to graduate and leave as well. A fifth year is a bonus.

In that case, it would be smart to stop red shirting players so that you can get for years from them.

Exactly. We lost quality years from Bates, Dortch, and probably Surratt anticipating a 5th year than didn’t exist.

I’ve wondered about that since the graduate student transfer became the thing several years ago. Seems like it now can be counterproductive.

Except that Jamie Newman wasn’t ready as a freshman. Or sophomore.

Dude was very raw coming out of HS.

For every one you mention there are 3 that needed the extra year in weight room and class room. Clearly puts pressure on coaches to identify early who to redshirt and who to not. And getting those most ready into school in January so they get an extra spring ball. The coaches will need to evolve with new realities.

That is sometimes really difficult to project. Tough to figure out which 18 year old 3* will become so good he will leave early and should be brought to Wake early to be groomed to play as true freshmen.

Some of these guys may want (or need) to stay in HS for the last semester of their senior year for academic or noìn-academic reasons.

Another thought is that there may be benefit to young bodies to have a year of less contact. Not hitting or being hit in game situations may have some benefit.

Good point

I think redshirt every o lineman and most every d lineman and everyone is up in air due to new realities of transfer rules and leaving for nfl

The four game rule can help in that process. If a true freshman shows potential in practice then let him play a few games early in the year. If he impresses then let him play the rest of the year. If not, then use the redshirt.

Right. It’s a different approach than saving for depth. It maybe what Clawson was doing with Walker but it seems like Clawson was planning to play him the whole time.

Interesting that some people are in the know about "agreements" clawson has with players. My guess would be that if you redshirt and the coach wants you for 5 years then they see that as an investment in 4 years of returns on the field. Anything less would not be a 100% return on their investment. Surely Newman falls in this category and Clawson and crew arent't happy with Newman fulfilling his "agreement".
