New coaching search thread

Thad Matta's $100,000/month payments (+ health insurance) from Ohio State apparently end after June, so he might be in the market. Beilein would be a home run, but I just don't think it will happen. After those two, sign me up for Turner - affordable, accomplished, Wake roots and still considers this general area home (both he and his wife are from Roanoke, VA).

Sounds like we have have a new entrant into the Pit Kumite. Netflix, where you seeding this guy?

I don't know, offering to fight the opposite sex first seems like a ploy to cop some feels

John Calipari, Bruce Pearl, Jim Calhoun and yes Roy Williams(fake classes)have all done some shady shit... Get over yourself there Mr. Perfect. I'd take Bruce Pearl and a damn beer everyday you feel good fucker....

You might accept or want that. Hatch and the Wake BoT won't. Rule breaking and bending, especially at the Bruce Pearl level would not pass muster with the Wake powers that be.

Wake's next coach needs to understand what Wake is and what Wake is about. Skip understood Wake. Clawson understands Wake. I don't think Danny does. The next coach really needs to.

That said, it doesn't mean the coach has to have been at Wake. It does mean that the coach needs to understand and appreciate what recruiting to and coaching at a small, academically focused private university means. There sre things that make Wake different from big state universities. Wake is also not a basketball blue blood, where the coach summons his choice of burger guys. The Wake coach will need to sell highly talented recruits on the advantages of playing at Wake. It has been done. It can be done again.

Wake can win with clean image coaches- Grobe, Odom, Prosser, Clawson... Wake isn’t going to turn into UNLV to win basketball games. If a coach has a reputation as a cheater, Wake won’t touch him.

Agreed , I would be fine with Forbes, but Hatch will veto.

Neither Turner or Richie McKay would excite the fanbase much at first but they would seem to check a lot of Hatch's boxes. After the way Liberty has handled the quarantine, McKay may be begging to leave.

Childress didn't like Manning cause Manning doesn't win basketball games?

/sarcasm

Forbes should be our floor. Period.
We've debated HoF Wes for years now. He's still a hard pass for LOWF Reasons.
Kelsey should've kept the UMass job and done something with it. He blew his chance. I really like him, but he blew it. He needs to grab the next A-10 job that becomes available to him. (As should HoF Wes, for that matter)
I stated back during the season that I thought that Currie is going to be going after Power-5 guys that had/or were having a burst of success that might be starting to fade off some. Guys that might be starting to feel some pressure to either get back to it or take it higher. Chambers, Cooley, etc. Guys in that 3 to 6 range in the other conferences and might be names we haven't considered or heard yet.
I still think that's where we're gonna get our guy. The new guy is going to be someone unexpected or it's Steve Forbes. That's it.

The hottest up and coming coach is our floor? You are about to be disappointed. Forbes is closer to our ceiling (if not the actual ceiling) than our floor.

I said this in one of these threads a while back, but I'd rather have Luke Murray than Miller. Assistant coasting experience matters. Major recruiting experience matters. P6 coaching experience matters. Miller fills none of those boxes. I'd rather hire a well-regarded assistant with significant recruiting expertise than a low-major coach who has had a decade-long stint at a school that has peaked as a top-80 program. Murray's connection with Mack should help, and he had experience under Danny Hurley at URI as well.

(I'd still much rather have Marshall/Beilein/Matta/Shaka/Forbes, obvs)

LOL, I'm out thanks Buttermaker... I'm just glad Currie stepped up and fired Danny's ass. Hopefully we get a great coach for the future and I've got no hate for ole wfu22fan but he wants Jesus..

You better watch your ass, buddy!

There is winning and there is losing. Winning the Wake Forest way doesn't exist. Until WF starts getting extra points on the scoreboard for it, it is just an excuse that people use to excuse WF losing.

I don't think some people know some of the stuff that went on with Prosser and his recruits. While a great guy & representative of WF, Prosser definitely pushed the envelope some where he could and his players were not exactly choir boys by any means (I still have an interesting picture of Vytas in a fraternity album).

But you're right, Prosser did know WF. He knew that WF was a smaller, tight-knit community so he made sure to try to reach every potential fan that he could so that he was able to develop a great home court. Find a coach that can maximize WF's advantages and sell the school/program, but get out of here with this "win the right way" stuff.

Well said..

Not sure if we'd be able to pry him from his alma mater, but LaVall Jordan is also worth a look. He was a big part of Michigan's bench under Beilein, and he's been solid at Butler.

Here's a name to watch in the next couple of years- Kyle Neptune- he's the top assistant at Nova and a great recruiter. He and Jay Wright have really been able to identify talent not in the Top 25.
