New coaching search thread

NOPE!

Once again - people fail to realize that all conferences outside the P6 aren't created equal.

I think even the most pro Kelsey people would acknowledge that his head coaching resume is weaker compared to other candidates. That’s a factor, but not the only factor in hiring.

That wasn't the question...

I don't think either has a win over a top 25 team (I don't think either has even played very many). Wes is 0-10 the last five years against KP top 25 teams (one home game, two neutral site tournament games, and seven road games). Wake over that span went 3-32 (all three wins at home)

In school at the same time.

No chance we are hiring a coach who has never even appeared in the NCAA Tourney.

Always a bad idea to make decisions off of a coach not winning a single elimination tournament.

That's how you end up preferring Danny Manning to Mike White

I don't think anybody is failing to realize this. I think that most of us have watched a decent number of games from 3rd tier local programs and don't want coaches from 3rd tier local programs.

Why should we give Wes a second chance. He turned us down before by going to another school.

I have seen/heard the rumors that Prosser refused to give Wes a walk-on position at Wake and as a result he wound up in Chapel Hell. This is hard to accept as fact since Wes's dad is such a big donor to Wake.

Agree. People seem to be missing this on Kelsey. I understand the fire and emotion part of this, but Winthrop's competition is horrendous. Far below the competition that Forbes at ETSU or Miller at UNCG (or even Richey at Furman).

Winthrop's strength of schedule was #336 this year out of 353 teams. Yes, Winthrop went 24-10 which on the surface seems like a nice record, but Kelsey's team went 23-3 against teams rated 200 or worse, and they 1-9 against teams rated 200 or below. Not saying Kelsey is a bad coach, just that "winning" in the Big South recently proves almost nothing.

Right, Wake played more top 100 teams this year than Winthrop has in five years.

If you listen to Josh Graham's podcast from yesterday, he makes a really good argument for Kelsey. He basically "checks all the boxes" with what Wake is looking for. He wasn't my top choice, but I'm starting to come around. He does have Power 6 experience when he coached with Prosser. He knows Wake. He's high energy. He presents himself well. I think players really like him. He has a lot of the characteristics that Prosser had. And he's younger. The main question is how quickly he can turn Wake around and bring in players and put us back on the basketball map.

How are people "in" on a guy with 3 years coaching experience, zero NCAA bids, zero conference championships, and no P5 recruiting experience? This fanbase is trash.

The thought of having to listen to a former Blue Goat player and Ole Roy surrogate at every press conference would be unbearable. Please Currrie do not hire little Wes.
This drives me insane. The boards/twitter are losing it over Amaker, being K's boy, but imagine the scene when Wake plays UNC, Wes will be hugging it out with ole Roy, Fat May, Hubert, any every UNC manager at center court. The UNC love fest will be fully engaged. Imagine the countless interviews about Wes and his great experiences playing at UNC. Every time Miller is mentioned, a comment from the announcers will follow about how much he learned from Roy during his UNC playing days, true or not. No thank you, this is gross, even if his daddy bought him the job at Wake. The nepotism, the UNC connections, totally seems like the most lame ass direction Wake would go, and would do so happily.

Flight just left Winston for Greenville SC.

The 11:05 flight to Greenville was to Greenville, NC. Maybe Manning’s friend, ECU Joe Dooley, is getting picked up for a visit?

There was a flight from Greenville, SC that arrived shortly before 11 AM. Maybe that was Richey?

No flights from Winston to Greenville, SC though.

Amaker and Collins are NOT in contention according to Evan Daniels. Daniels also says Forbes and Wes are the leaders right now. Evans Bomb!

I'd rather have Richey than Amaker.

For sure.

Two knocks on Richey:
1) He hasn't built / rebuilt a program, although he has elevated it from where Medved had it.
2) He doesn't have power conference recruiting experience

I would put him in the Kelsey tier.

so I guess that United 757 heading to Smith Reynolds from O'Hare isn't a charter for Collins
