They're obviously pretty weird looking fish and they're pretty shy. I was whale watching in Bar Harbor the first time I saw one and the naturalists and boat captain were losing their shit because they'd never seen one. The second time I saw one was about 10 miles out of Charleston Harbor. Then I saw one in Mexico or Costa Rica and I'm all jaded and everything.

A classic trick to try to get people excited and tip better. Sunfish are everywhere off the coast of New England.

Waiting for some rain to roll through this afternoon after this stupid Zoom call and then I'm gonna go surf fishing.

Jugging for catfish and watching a big one pull the whole milk jug under like the shark in jaws never gets old to me. Then campfires and fresh catfish filets. Heaven.

My dad really likes to eat smallmouth bass. I can’t ride on that train.

Catfish are so miserable to clean though. They take forever to die, so they're usually alive while you're doing it. And they don't have scales so you have to (at least the way I was taught) rip their skin off with pliers. I have to REALLY be feeling manly/outdoorsy or REALLY want fresh catfish to do it these days.

I guess I could bump the fishing thread, but would trout fishing up around Banner Elk be any good this time of year? Will be up there this weekend, and would like some recs. Don't have fly gear, unfortunately.

I like fish, but lobster seems like too much work. I even went to this place in San Francisco that had these day long cooked crab things that you could basically take apart with your hands, but it was still too much work. That's my only real complaint, is when you have to take tails/shells off and stuff. Sometimes I just want to EAT.

But down with fish/sushi/seafood, generally.

Lobster isn't that much work once you get used to it. I married a Mainer and my gurl can CRUSH 3 lobsters in just a couple of minutes. We go up to Maine a couple or three times a year and she goes crazy with the lobbies, especially when they're like $4.99/lb.

Nope.

I went on a nature kayaking thing in Bar Harbor/Mt. Desert Island back when I was in middle school and it was amazing. Buddy of mine's dad spent two straight summers up there running some science thing, so I went up a couple of times -- once for a week+ at this small cabin with no electricity, the next summer was in this huge mansion right on the coast -- as a however-year old (12/13), it seemed big. It seems big in my memory. We just fucked around in the house, or went biking into town, or went to Sand Beach, or the hot dog joint down the road, or hiking.

Anyway, we had a couple of Minke whales come right up under us, saw a bunch of seals, a bald eagle or two, I'm probably forgetting a couple of things, it was AMAZING. It was all foggy at the start when we were kicking off -- I just have a cool memory of it.

For some it is a health and safety issue. Shellfish allergies can be life threatening. Life is not worth a lobster. Just being around cooking of these can be a very unpleasant experience.

Others have religious reasons for not eating shellfish.

So be careful who you chastise.

right, more a full grown adult who is like "fish are icky"

this. I've met plenty in my life.

Have we ever ranked states on here? Maine would be in my Top-10, I think.

This was the place the one year at the mansion.

9. NC
10. Utah

Only been to 38 states, but here's my top 5 (no order)

NC, Texas, Utah, Colorado, New Hampshire

Honorable Mention to Washington (I've only been to Seattle) and California (I've only been to the part of CA at Tahoe)

States I have not visited: Alaska, Oregon, ND, SD, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Maine, Vermont, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota

I also think Kentucky is kind of a cool state. Its pretty gorg to drive through.

NM/AZ is cool but I didn't spend enough time there. Really Rocky Mountains->Pacific is cool, driving through the Great Plains sucked though. I'd probably rank Kansas last. Mississippi/Missouri River cities makes Iowa and Nebraska slightly cooler. Pennsylvania kind of sucks too. Philly is like the 5th best NE/Mid Atlantic city and the rest of the state? Yeesh.

Just gonna assume that any list without NC in the top 5 is a troll.
