The 2020-21 College Football Thread: Alabama Unleashes Bold Familiar Flavor on CFB !!

Everything about how we deal with this pandemic is and has been fluid. I'm selfishly glad they changed course, but I have no idea if it's the right decision.

Lot's of commentators heaped praise on the Big 10/Pac 12 and dumped on the ACC/Big 12/SEC back in August. Time to eat some crow.

Yeah what crow exactly? We won’t know if it’s the right decision for a while, and may never know the full extent of it. BTBs post is correct, we need to be fluid.

Wouldn't even be a concern if we had actually fucking done something to deal with the pandemic in some uniform fashion. With only 8 games, the other missing games should be counted as losses , the best a Big 10 teams can finish is 9-2.

That's exactly the point. There is no right or wrong in dealing with pandemic. No one knows what the right path is. People need to stop acting like there is only one responsible response.

Those that crapped on the conferences that sought to return to play safely, and praised the BIG 10, as if those commentators knew what the right path was and only the wise Big 10 Presidents acted responsibly are full of it. The Big 10 reversed course in a month. So, are all of those wise and responsible Big 10 Presidents, just as evil and greedy as those in charge of the other conferences now? No, everyone made the best decision that they could based upon the currently available information.

Yes they are just as greedy as the others - the greed just won out in the end. That doesn't change the objective answer.

Its better to just admit what you are than pretend you are something you are not. The Big 10 got the praise because it appeared they were making a responsible decision but their entire decision was based on other leagues folding with them, no way when they decided to not play did they think other conferences would be like well good for you now fuck off. Once they realized the other conferences were all in they were left scrambling to come up with some reason to play again because well money.

at least the B1G succeeded in getting the non-revenue fall NCAA sports championships cancelled

$54 million per school for the B1G is pretty significant and I'm sure every one of those college presidents got a huge WTF from their AD.

Not just greed. It's that life has to move forward. People criticized the PGA when they restarted first, then the NBA and NHL, then MLB (particularly after the Marlins and Cardinals had outbreaks), NFL and now college football. Rather than just shutdown without an end, we now know that if people act responsibly and are disciplined taking care of themselves and protecting others, we can move forward with life. That's a really important lesson. Those that follow protocols, take reasonable precautions and think about others can do more than just stay locked up at home, waiting for a cure that may or may not come.

The problem is the people that need to learn that lesson won't. The group that is already responsible, wear masks, limited gatherings, etc... deserve to have life move forward and positive things like a football season that comes about from responsibility and discipline. The other group simply prolongs things, is a negative to society moving forward, and positive things like football are simply used to further disregard necessary precautions. So yeah they won't take away any positive lessons here.

Have y'all seen the details of the B1G announcement? No chance they get in a full 8 game season.

- Players have to sit out 21 days after a positive test (other conferences are at 10-14)
- >5% team positive rate equals full shutdown - no practice or competition - that's like 7 players

At a minimum, no chance the season gets completer before the BCS playoff. The other conferences have bye weeks built-in to make up games. IIRC, the Big 10 only has one bye week built in. Also, would seem like the number of cases will increase as the weather gets cold and people spend more time inside. The Big 10 will be trying to play games in the heart of the flu season.

One thing to consider as well is the nature of how treatment is changing - each month that passes gains significant insights into how to better treat the disease. By starting on 10/24, that gives another month before games for even more treatments and better testing to become available.

Zero bye weeks. Every team scheduled to play a cross divisional matchup the same weekend as the championship game to create a 9 game schedule. The cross-divisional extra game based on regular season performance is actually pretty cool, if it happens.

Sure if that’s the way you want to frame it in light of the reasons the Big 10 presidents want football then that’s fine. The reason they’re doing it is greed and money.

It is what it is but the reason is money. That’s why everyone is picking and choosing what goes ahead.

Although, I guess congratulations are in order for the B1G for finally becoming the SEC.

Even though they're more like the ACC than the SEC.
