WFU Hoops: '21-'22 Roster Construction Thread: +LaRavia/Taylor/Walton/Monsanto/Williams/Sy/Marsh

Pre-pandemic the students were reportedly disinterested in athletics. Could this be what he is referencing? Maybe that was just prior to my leaving.

Why would any of our students be interested in basketball? They would have been somewhere in the range of 8-12 years old the last time we were a decent team.

Until I see that actual quote from ody, I’m not going to believe it. No one , even today’s generation could ever possibly be that lame.

But the Class of 2020 would have the amazing memory of the team playing in a play-in game for the 2017 NCAA. Plus that exciting win over BC in the ACC Tourney that year.

What does it matter his reasoning? He's gone. We'll be fine. Trust in Forbes!

Well, I don’t know how else to take this quote other than him saying Wake basketball fans suck. The idea that our basketball fanbase blows is an odd take since nobody could attend games this season and the Twitter support for Forbes and the team has actually been extremely good over the past year. Go under just about any portal/HS target’s Twitter posts and it’s filled with Wake fans. Not sure what more he expects at Butler, UCF, GT, or ECU.

I see it as anger that the fans weren’t supportive of Manning. It’s kind of in the same vein as Brandon Childress’ statements after the Duke game about doubters and such.

I like Ody’s hustle but I’m happy to get rid of players and coaches who expect fans to show up for bad basketball.

Yep...wish him well as a person but not sad in the least to see him go.

Mucius is a national treasure for his loyalty to Wake, and I'm glad he's the last Manning guys. I don't count Tariq since Tariq never played a minute for him

Doesn't matter where he goes if he can't make a 3 foot uncontested bunny hook.

Those ECU, UCF, & GT basketball fans are raucous for sure.

Not a real good quote when leaving the program. I did like him but now not so much. Blaming the fan support to an extent for leaving after the year we have had is very lame. Probably was not confident of his playing time for next season but who cares at this point

Wake just had really bad fictional covid fans. We should've done better. And apparently we should've supported Manning for all of his great success.

Noted, Ody

This is a guy who wasn’t even ranked in the top 300 and got to start for an ACC team. Feel free to transfer but man, be thankful to Manning and Forbes for the opportunity and smile on your way out.

yep show a little class

There will be more fans and louder fans at UC games this year than Wake games, guaranteed. Maybe not the others. But his quote is focused on UC.

There is perhaps a bit of a larger point here too re "culturally". The crowd at Wake bball games over the last number of years has looked on TV like a Church's bridge club. When I went back for a Homecoming game a few years ago, the students were basically still dressing the same as in the early 00's. It just seems like it could be hard (and not just that desirable) for some African American athletes to feel like they fit into a scene like that.

The fact that most of us actually made it through the Wellman/Buzz/Manning era shows that we are actually pretty good fans. Much better fans than any of them were as stewards of our basketball program. We don't get paid (in money or scholarships) to pull for WFU. We actually choose to be miserable.

So there.

"and I want a place where I feel welcome". That is surprising read, all my Wake buddies and I loved Ody. It seemed to me like he was a fan favorite. This seems to be more related to a coaching change than anything else.

Yeah. Aside from obviously great players who win, there's nobody Wake fans love more than the lightly recruited guy who tries hard and overachieves. Ody would have been beloved after four years.

One thing we're really losing with all the transfers is the four-year athlete who is always treated like a hero when he comes back to campus. Now it's just a bunch of forgettable guys.

Not the best quote from Ody, but I don’t see where he said anything bad about Wake.

I guess you could say it was implied, but he also could just be talking about what he’d like to see at his next stop.

Whatever. He gone.
