F is for Fascism (Ferguson MO)

As far as earlier where it was discussed that people have some weird deferment to the word of police I’m curious if that will change moving forward. I’ll probably never sit on a jury but if I did and there is no body camera footage and it’s just the word of the police, I’m automatically dismissing it and there has to be more and more people with the same thinking.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Assuming you are honest under oath, that would be ferreted out in voir dire and you'd be struck for cause.

On a very special episode of Low Expectations Theater, we discuss how crime is the responsibility of...*checks notes, looks awkwardly off camera, Ron Burgundy-voice*...NOT the perpetrators?

Except we know that whether or not an activity is considered a crime depends on whether police decide to look for it and arrest someone for it, whether a prosecutor decides to prosecute, whether the defendant can adequately defend themselves through the legal process, and if it gets that far, how a judge or jury rule on the case.

The police and DA decided killing Armaud Arbery wasn’t a crime for over two months. It took a video and national outcry to even start the criminal justice process. And we know the killers (a former cop and his son) knew they weren’t going to be punished and the guy who filmed it thought it would show them favorably. Without that video, people like you would claim killing Arbery was self-defense.

People in power decide what is a crime and whether or not to investigate it. For example, that’s why Republicans decided Benghazi was worth multiple investigations but Jan 6 isn’t.

This is a big problem in itself. A juror who requires evidence to vote to convict someone of a crime would be struck from a jury.

I got into an argument with a cop this morning. It was fine for me because I am a white male driving a fairly nice car to work, so after he finished being a sarcastic asshole and realized he was wrong and that our confrontation was a result of his laziness and shitty police work, he chilled out and I went on my way.

Just comply and do what they say!

That sucks. Our systems filters out jurors that acknowledge that people lie.

A Pennsylvania State trooper also pulled up and fired, thinking the teen was the suspect, according to prosecutors. The 15-year-old was wearing a grey hoodie and blue jeans, was about the same build as the fleeing felon, David Leatherman. and was carrying what turned out to be a black cell phone.

Leatherman, who was wanted for attempted murder, was wearing a gray hoodie and black pants.

The teen ducked behind a tree. The prosecutor's report said one of the rounds fired by the deputy was recovered later from that tree, and several other rounds were recovered from other trees between the teen and the deputy.

State's Attorney J. Charles Smith, III said, under Maryland law, prosecutors would have had to be able to prove the officers were "objectively unreasonable" in their use of force to charge them with a crime.

Not only was it ok for them to shoot a fleeing suspect. It was ok for them to shoot at a completely innocent 15 year old boy. It seems problematic that killing someone requires less evidence than charging someone with a crime.

Luckily, none of the eight shots fired at the boy by the officers found their mark.

It happened on Oct. 19, 2020, but the public is only learning about it now, seven months later, after the Frederick County State's Attorney decided there was not enough evidence to charge the law enforcement officers with a crime.

This isn’t necessarily racist fascist stuff...it’s out of control trigger happy police though. All these officers should have their guns taken away.

Shitty, unclear closing of exit ramp for clearing of an accident. Cruisers with flashing lights there to "close" the exit were pulled over leaving a gaping lane partly on the shoulder, ostensibly for cars to take the ramp around the tow trucks. wrecked cars already off roadway and on flatbeds. Chilly morning, obese cop didn't want to stand outside and direct cars. No signage, cones, or flares. Nothing. I slowed to a crawl and was looking at this shit trying to determine if I was able to take the passageway or travel another mile to the next exit to get to work.

God-complex pig gets out shouting, incredulously: "STOP STOP STOP - do you REALLY think this exit is open??"
me: "I don't know, it looks like we are supposed to go around and use that portion of the shoulder but I don't..."
pig: "WHAT?!?! You really think it's open?!?!? ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?! shaking head and waving hands wildly
me: "It's hard to tell, that is why I slowed down to take a more careful look. I didn't see any police out here just the cruisers pulled over..
pig: stares like a pro wrestler to try and scare me
me: "there is no-one directing traffic safely away from the incident. No one is out here and there is plenty of open roadway to safely get around. no signage or anything
pig: more staring and attempted intimidation.
me: looking at him and saying nothing
pig: well I'm sorry sir, its closed
me: ok thanks, looking over shoulder at 80mph oncoming traffic to get back on highway without any help from big boy

:noidea:

This is making waves locally today. Essentially Asheville PD will stop responding in person to crimes where there is low chance for a resolution. But they’re mainly losing officers because of the shit pay.

some of the thing on that list aren't even crimes, which is a bit weird

The Asheville Police Department has a budget of $29M and a staff of 238 sworn officers and 63 non-sworn professionals. It is the largest police department in western North Carolina.
That's a huge percentage.
