MBB Game 27: WF at Duke -- Tuesday 7 pm: ESPN

It has been so long since we won at Duke. There were no smartphones. I had an intramural basketball game that night and the radio feed of the game was being played in the gym. (Important note, my team won too.) I think Liquid Karma reffed that game.

Actually I think that was the 1996 win at Duke. We won at Duke so often then I can’t keep it straight.

I was a freshman in 96-97, so it's possible if it was the 97 game.

Although I feel like the 97 game was while we were still on winter break, or the week we got back.

The only apology will be to K for not consulting with him directly and securing approval before overturning the call.

I wasn't able to watch the game, but you can bet I was refreshing the shit outta my phone.

Bummed about the outcome, but apparently a great showing from our guys. Crazy that we haven't won in Cameron since '97

Just watched the last couple of minutes on ESPN+ and it was 10x more exhausting than watching a little score update. Such a gutsy and strong game from a team and coach that I don't think any of us were prepared to be this good.

GO DEACS!!!

Now I enjoy Rece Davis on college game day, but when he calls games at dook he treats them like he's on the 18th of the Masters. It's almost like, you guys know you are going to lose, so I'm not investing excitement or effort in the game unless it's close at the end.

The best part was when he (or ESPN) decided to give Debbie flowers as play started and we were down 4, then they blabbered on while we cut it to two (the first time) with no call of the play.

I think he managed, at one point to say something about 22 (now 23) game losing streak at Cameron being the record.

Both of them were awful. Uggh.

There is already an HD replay out there, and I watched it multiple times. Williams' left hand and/or Moore tip the ball when it is maybe out of the cylinder, but then it goes back over the cylinder, where Williams recontrols it, and then dunks it through. It would be one thing if Williams grabbed it with his left hand, kept possession of it as he brought it over the rim and then got his right hand on it to complete the dunk. However, there was definitely no possession between the first tip, and then when he touched it once again when it was over the cylinder. So it seems to me the first tip was an OK play - but the second touch within the cylinder would be basket interference.

Looking at the only replay view we apparently have, the ball was bouncing off to the left, I think clearly off the rim which is what everyone is focused on, then the ball is tipped by the two hands on the left over the rim again and then Williams grabs it with his left and puts it through.

somehow, the call on the floor seems to have been good basket despite the initial signal from the ref, which would make the replay an easy inconclusive / no overturn. no clue why or when they decided to call it a good basket on the floor, but that’s what was reflected on the scoreboard and had the duke bench celebrating.

Guys, you gotta mute the commentators and sync up Stan and the Dinger. Your life will improve immeasurably

2 of the 3 officials waved it off. I'm guessing the 3rd counted it and the scorer saw that first.

I'll be surprised if Wake doesn't respond to the Miami loss and take the Blue Devils to the wire. It should be one of the best ESPN basketball games of the year.

Got that part correct.

It was clearly basket interference. As Deac83 describes, Williams tipped the live ball with his left hand and then flushed the ball while it was in the cylinder with his right hand. Two separate and distinct taps. TOB has replays and photos on pages 9 and 10 that leave no doubt, except in the eyes of ESPN and the refs. As expected, the refs followed orders, reversed the call and gave K the win.

The Deacons played to their identity of GGTT. A nineteen point comeback in the final 15 minutes. During those 15 minutes Duke scored 10 points from the line to Wakes five points, so the refs never quit giving Duke the benefit of the whistle. As the game tightened again late, the whistle seemed to go both ways. The final second went as directed. We knew it coming into the game. No surprise to any veteran of ACC basketball.

There is no quit in this team. The Deacons showed themselves worthy of an NCAA invitation tonight on national television.

Don’t we all wish it worked that way. A loss does not help a bubble team. This isn’t football.

A huge missed opportunity at that coveted signature win.

Saturday is one last shot at a quality win. Winning ugly or controversiallly matters way more than how we look against the Irish.

Yeah, there’s way too much positive energy around here for a game that we lost in excruciating fashion.

It’s a loss. It could have been an important win. It doesn’t help us in the next 4 games, which we need to win.

And it was goaltending.

Thought at time it was good call but on closer evaluation of replay it did appear clearly to me that Moore tip ball out of cylinder and then Williams stuff ball through with ball in the cylinder. Clear interference. If call reversed would have still been overtime so we can’t celebrate to much.

Really is unbelievable that the refs take all that time with access to all the angles (one assumes) and get it wrong. I think the ACC needs to come out with a statement that they got it wrong. Won't hold my breath but it is really sad and not fair that the game ended here.

It's goaltending but they have 2 guys above the rim and we have 3 guys standing there watching and I guess not boxing out.

That's how you lose 23 in a row.

In addition, they had to go back and check the clock after we complained about the .2 seconds remaining

Yep. I was more upset at Wake's failure to put butts on dook players under the goal.

Box out and maybe we get the over the back call and we're shooting FT's for the win....

"Nah, probably not in here." :(
