WFU Hoops: '22-'23 Roster Construction Thread: +Ituka/Carr/Appleby/Bradford

I agree. I feel that is a flaw in Forbes overall coaching repertoire - his lack of using a zone (several types available) at such times as you mention. If he adds that item, I think his resume becomes pretty complete. 'Bones' was great at designing such strategy as needed. Don't shy to pick up something from Boeheim for use as needed.

Forbes may have felt that the guys weren't "connected" enough to play zone well. A bad zone gives up many easy baskets.

Looks like another good addition. ~ 2 to 4 more scholarships to fill for next season.

If Davien comes back, we’d legit have a 3-guard rotation each member of which can shoot the p*ss out of the ball.

Zone is for cowards who think Denny's is fine dining.

I was going to say that my assumption is Forbes would rather spend his practice time working on improving man-to-man (and many other things) instead of taking the time necessary to put in an effective zone.

But your post is more eloquent.

I guess that’s why you’re a writer and I work at Denny’s.

Yep, and add Carr to Monsanto, Daivien and Appleby and you’ve got four guys who are legit threats from deep. We need 1-2 bigs and would love a Mucius type SF to round out the class. Forbes is putting together another great roster.

So we should stop panicking now?

The vibe I stand by is Forbes will always put together a roster that can compete in the ACC. I imagine our minutes projections will be fun come June.

Totally agree with this. The key from the guys we have will be Ituka being able to handle the ball, as we struggled a lot with turnovers for a variety of reasons but he had a fantastically low TO rate relative to usage as a freshman and looks to have an excellent handle.

We need a big desperately and a 6'7"+ Mucius type 3/4 is exactly what we need to feel confident on the wing in addition to the guards we have who are mostly undersized. I would be shocked if Daivien didn't come back.

1: Ituka, Daivien
2: Appleby, Hildreth, McCray, Monsanto sometimes, don't expect Taylor to play much
3: Monsanto, transfer?, Cam sometimes (big enough and physical enough to guard a lot of 3s imo)
4: Carr, transfer?
5. Marsh, transfer needed please!, Carr when we must

Basically I'm saying we need a minimum of two more transfers if Jake does leave, with one being a 3/4 and one being a 5 or a 4/5. Would love to not have to play Carr as a center as like Jake he should explode in productivity when he's able to move from center at mid major level to his natural position as a forward in the ACC.

You forget our only incoming freshman, Keller who should slot in at the 4 or 5.

forbes and staff will land one more serviceable big for next season

Yea I tried to edit the post to include him. Honestly don't see him being an impact player right off the bat as he didn't face particularly stiff high school competition and the step up is often more difficult and takes more time for bigs than guards. Don't see him as a 5 at all with his body type (6'9", not very bulky) and his game, but he should be an effective forward for us in the future. If he could be playable this year that could be a huge help but I think he'll need some time and we could do with a grad transfer coming in ahead of him for a year.

He showed more of a face up game this year than he had previously and has an elite power dribble to the hoop and he has a high motor getting up and down the court and attacking the glass. while these are all great attributes to look forward to, in this day and age with the free covid year and so many transfers and fifth years playing at high major level it is rare for a freshman to come in and have a major role on a good power conference team, and those kids are usually found in the top 40 of recruiting rankings. Moral of the story is Forbes preaches players earning minutes, not being handed them based on expectations as in the last era of Wake bball. We should go after a quality transfer ahead of him and if he earns minutes then we know he's ready, and if he doesn't he'll have his time to shine in years 2-4.
