WFU Hoops: '22-'23 Roster Construction Thread: +Ituka/Carr/Appleby/Bradford

you could have given me 100 guesses who the guy in the picture getting married is and I wouldn't have guessed steve forbes.

Same. Looks like a completely different guy now.

Barking Abbey is such a fucking perfect British school name

Apparently, it's Barking Abbey's new head coach coaching some Abbey alums and some members of the London Lions BBL team. So that should be a better challenge.

The only name I recognized from the Lions roster is Kosta Koufos who played at Ohio State and played a few years in the NBA. If I remember correctly, Doral Moore was on their roster two seasons ago but never played.

We are delighted to welcome Wake Forest and former Scorchers young talent Cameron Hildreth who will be entering his second year at WF after a successful freshmen season.
Barking Abbey will be playing under Head Coach James Vear composed of Abbey alumni as well as some of British basketballs top tier talent.

so we play Utah Valley State at home as a part of the Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic

Utah Valley State is coached by Mark Madsen (before that, by Mark Pope) and last year was #119 in the KP ratings. They compete in the WAC, which is completely unrecognizable to me (Chicago St is in the WAC)

Funny that the home game for the Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic is (arguably) a tougher opponent than the other 3 teams we might see in Jamaica.

if we go on last year's KP, the non-con schedule is basically (last year's KP ratings in ():

Really terrible teams (sub-200 last year) (5 or 6):
Fairfield (206)
Georgia (219)
La Salle (229)
maybe LMU (203)
SC State (306)
Hampton (326)

Bad to terrible teams (125-200) (1 or 2):
maybe Georgetown (175)
App State (166)

Decent but unlikely to move the needle (1):
Utah Valley (119)

Possible Tier 1 (1):
at Rutgers (77, but Ron Harper Jr left)

Probable Tier 1 (2):
LSU (21)
at Wisconsin (37)

Needless to say, we need to get out of the non-con with at worst two losses to LSU and Wisconsin and we need Rutgers and UVU to be better than last year.

I think the main difference is that there are a lot fewer objectively terrible (KP 250+) teams on the schedule this season relative to last.

Our OOC SOS was weighed down by the number of terrible games last year.

Rutgers is away, so if they get to 75 NET, that is a quad 1 game. At worst, quad 2.

yes, last year WF played 8 teams rated below 200, including 5 that were 250+; this year, we are scheduled to play 6 and 2 (important to note that last year we played Oregon State, who reasonably should have been at least decent but ended up #233; by necessity I am comparing actual ratings to last year's ratings)

Rutgers *could be* a Tier 1 game but I am skeptical

Rutgers was very formidable at home last year. They beat Iowa, Michigan, Purdue, Ohio State and Illinois on that court. They lost in a first 4 game last year (to Notre Dame), but they were the 4 seed in the B10 tourney.

I have no idea what they're returning though.

looks like in addition to Harper they lose a 5-year starting pg, but the other 3 starters return - based on this I am revising my assessment of Rutgers. That will be a good test for WF on the road.

TBH that schedule, while better, still seems like trash. It won't help us at all, and can only hurt us. Hopefully is closer to just a wash.
