2024 Wake Women's Basketball Offseason - Grad transfer SMU PG Tamia Jones

I think (especially in women's sports) the "NIL money" will still be there even if they're pro. NIL money basically means endorsement deals and I think the Iowa player could make plenty of endorsement money regardless of where she is next year (Iowa, UConn WBB, or some random pro womens NBA team). They got a huge amount of coverage this year and the ratings do not lie.

Bird and Taurasi were talking about this a bit during the first semifinal on Friday. Basically said "get your money in college - the WNBA will be there waiting for you once you're out of eligibility",

Sure, but Caitlin Clark is a 21 year old woman. She would be the first pick in the 2023 WNBA draft. if she wants to play in the WNBA, she should be allowed to do so.

That said, guessing she doesn't care because of NIL.
That sounds like a law suit waiting to happen.

Hayley Van Lith is grad transferring after three years at Louisville with two more years of eligibility. She’s one of the highest earning NIL athletes.

True all that. Reading that the average WNBA salary is now $130 and can top out at $500 with marketing agreements & bonuses. Many have also gone to Euro leagues but that has been cut way down with problems of Griner and cutting off of Russia teams in their leagues. WNBA pay has been bumped to try & keep talent home. But with only 12 teams and veterans staying longer, new young talent just has a hard time making rosters. If good NIL monies are available, stay and get it.

Add that some women’s teams have charter flights and better training facilities than WNBA teams.

As the women’s game takes off, there are going to be four year stars who build their brand and get nice six figure NIL deals. Who are the returning men’s basketball players with the brand that Clark, Reese, and Paige Bueckers?

Our latest commit Marqus Mitrovic Marion has a little sister Bella who is tall and plays basketball. An interesting note worth keeping an eye on.

Bella was in MMM's signing day video. She's not that much shorter than MMM. Her mom says she's 6-4. With a 2008 birth year and playing on a U15 team, I assume she'll be in the 2026 recruiting class.

Her dad coached her in high school. Father and daughter look just alike.

Wake offered her out of high school. She was ranked #57 in the 2022 class by ESPNW.

Any word on Cowles, Conley, and McWhorter? It would be weird to lose a starter in Summiel and an occasional player in Morales, but keep three players who didn't play.

McWhorter has missed 2 full seasons now with a torn ACL. Seems like a really long recovery to me, but I'm not a doctor. She doesn't even really practice live. Cowles got a concussion earlier this season and then just never practiced or played. Again, seems like an extended recovery, but I probably don't have the full picture.

Both remind me of Kaylen Dickson, who was perennially injured and didn't play or practice for two full seasons while on scholarship. It certainly seems to me that they don't rehab with a massive sense of injury like the men do.

Raegyn Conley has a ton of potential. Outside of Jewel/Elise she's probably the best pure scorer on the team. I think she'll play a lot more next year.

I'm fairly confident Summiel visited Clemson, and wants to stay in the P6. It'd be annoying to see her in the ACC.

Assuming Lester commits, here's how we stand for next year.

Guards: Kaia Harrison (Grad), Elise Williams (Jr), Jewel Spear (Jr), Katie Deeble (R-Fr), Makaela Quimby (Fr), Rylie Theuerkauf (Fr)
Wings: Alex Scruggs (Grad), Aliah McWhorter (Sr), Raegyn Conley (Jr), Alyssa Andrews (Jr), Madisyn Jordan (Fr)
Bigs: Demeara Hinds (Sr), Malaya Cowles (Jr), Imani Lester (R-Fr)

That's 14, you get 15. Would think they would try an add another big, after Demeara they are very unproven.

Demeara is "proven" to be a solid backup big but not a starter for a bubble team. I'd really like to get a big wing too. Someone with Becker or Summiel's size would be sufficient.

Well damn.

Kind of makes sense. It’s the closest P6 school outside NC. Good for her and Cam.

Tough to see a starter move to an opponent Wake will play next season. So many other places she could haven gone. But only a few P6 schools are closer. And VaTech give her the best chance to play for a title.

Duke and State had a lot of players enter the portal.
