Totally Unofficial 2022/23 Premier League Thread

Yeah, this is how City do it, it seems inevitable. Fuckin Pep, man, that creep can roll.

Funnily enough, we are likely to clinch top 4 today barring a tremendous Brighton comeback. Would have bit your hand off in August to have clinched that with 5 still to play. Gloomy way to do it but happy for that nonetheless.

What's Pep's deal ? bad guy or just "deservedly" condescending ? educate the noob please
He’s better than you and he knows it. But also he’s not exactly taken the hard way to his successes which is what some people hold against him. Potentially fraudulent, definitively bald.

I don't think he's a bad guy, just one of those insane genius types that probably struggles relating to "normal" folks, but also likes to pretend he doesn't have any real advantages with the spending ability he has. I sort of get it, I think he could probably win anywhere, but he sometimes takes legit questions about City's ownership oddly personally.

Dicey one for Liverpool, who just hang on. Thiago lucky to not give away a handball in the box late, which I think was probably just the right call, but it was weird because it hits his arm twice. Bowen also had one taken off for an offside when Van Dijk was just way too casual (shocker). Liverpool probably better on the balance, but not great.

Not the best match I've ever seen. But a continued decent run for Liverpool. Almost definitely too late for a Champions League spot, but a Europa place would be an ok finish for how they started.

Lee Dixon is absolutely cracking me up. American commentators should learn from it. Unabashedly biased and proud of it.
Blah, Boston announcers are all huge homers and its awful. Give me neutral announcers who love the sport every day.

Also when did Pep ever have a team that wasn't considered the favorite or 2nd favorite team to win the league? Genius is so freely given for a guy who gets results from the most talented squads. He's a good/great manager for getting results, but he's never over performing really.

We won’t know until after the game but I don’t think Partey is fully fit. He came up a little gimpy after a challenge early in the game and has looked a step slower than usual since. Still not covering himself in glory, though. Really hope we get Caicedo and Rice over the line this summer because we need freshness and depth in the midfield.
Partey's been a shadow of himself recently- he's gotta be hurt. Caicedo and Rice would be amazing. Where else can you see an upgrade? Is challenging City even possible next year or are they too far away?

It's likely that we will need a new backup LB as Tierney is probably moving on. Could also do with additional depth at the #8 position, I'm not sure how much weight to give the Mount rumors but he's the age profile, position profile, and reportedly character profile that Arteta likes so it makes sense. Fresneda is being rumored as well at RB, it's entirely possible we bring in an additional 2-3 defenders total.

I don't know the answer to your question, truly. I would have said before this year that there was no shot anyone could unless they have a nation-state backing them; I still think that might be accurate. It's borderline impossible to cultivate the depth that City have across their entire first team. Arsenal showed this year that when their best XI are on the pitch, they can play at City's level, but even taking one piece away in the stretch run with Saliba's injury shows how fragile that brilliancy really was. Everyone is stretched to the maximum right now and this was probably the best chance City is going to give anyone for a while and Arsenal couldn't capitalize. City will spend their normal large amount on international quality players this summer and reset for another deep run in all competitions. The only way I can see Arsenal challenging City to this degree again is if Martinelli and Saka take the biggest possible leap into being truly world class superstars, Saliba comes back with a clean bill of health, and Arsenal can revamp their midfield without losing the fluidity they had for most of this season. It's possible, but a very narrow gap to try to hit.

Guess that's all in how you define "over performing"

The year before he arrived at Barcelona they won nothing. In his four years they won:

3 La Ligas
3 Spanish Super Cups
2 UCLs
2 Copa Del Reys
2 UEFA Super Cups
2 World Club Cups

That's 14 trophies and included a treble of a Copa Del Rey, a La Liga and a UCL (which Barca had never done). To me that's an over performance to any rational expectation

That should have been a penalty. I’m not sure how we got from the last women’s World Cup where if the ball sniffed anyone’s upper body it’s a PK to Thiago double trapping the ball with an outstretched arm but yeah, here we are.

I thought it was close, but his lunge plays it off the attacker, which then ricochets off his arm for the double hit, in pretty close proximity.

I think if the ref calls it a handball, it stays one. I think if Thiago lunges to block the ball but the attacker plays it first, and it does the same double arm touch, it's a penalty; but I think the ricochet aspect and close proximity makes it just the right call.

But I'd be upset about it if I was West Ham, too.
