Mason Garcia of ECU in portal now, too. I don’t think we’ll have any issue finding at least a serviceable quarterback in the portal assuming Kern does leave.

Definitely very wrong with this thought— but maybe Santino and Mitch announcing at roughly the same time could mean something about Kern? Probably not anything there, but thought I’d throw it out there.

If Kern is going to leave, it seems likely that announcement would come very soon. It’s not likely that someone shows up and sways him into the transfer portal with an NIL offer, so if he wants to leave he should already know that.

Agreed- Kern ain't getting an NIL offer based on 2023 stats. I think it's more if he just wants to move on.

Is it this semester he graduates?
yes, with his graduate degree

which, I suppose, means he could just take 12 hours next fall, for fun, to be an eligible player. maybe that and some NIL $$ will be enough to keep him around

Don't get me wrong- I want Kern to stick around but what has he done to earn any NIL dollars? Think we would be better off saving that money for other guys in my opinion. I have no idea how much or how little we have but I'm assuming it's a finite amount compared to other schools.

We knew that Kern was significantly better than Griffis. Clawson didn't know this? Why not??

Hell, Tino was better as well.

Clawson's the one paid millions of $$$ to know. FAIL.

Depends on WF's other options are at QB.

Griffis and Tino are gone.

So, if Kern leaves, that leaves WF witch Charlie Gilliam (and it drives me nuts when any conclusions are made about him because he didn't play this year; he was a true frosh and was injured for a part of the Fall; he could be the next Pat Mahomes or Mitch Griffis, but no one knows; the fact that he didn't play this year means nothing), Jeremy Hecklinski, walk-ons and whomever WF can pull from the portal. I can see a rationale for offering Kern enough NIL money to ensure that there is an acceptable floor for WF QB next year because relying on two freshman and the hope that a portal QB works out is incredibly risky at a key position.

Kern is clearly not the QB of the future. But as of right now, if he doesn't return, we'll have a redshirt freshman who didn't earn a snap this past year, and a true freshman listed at 6', 175

I mean, that's nowhere near enough depth in the room. If we can convince Kern to stick around for $100 - $150k that seems wise to me. I don't think we'll be in the running for TVD or the Washington QB.

Very interesting recruiting profile.

Kern being significantly better than Griffis does not mean he is our QB of the future. I will be very concerned if he is now anointed as the guy. Can we please try not to message-board-post him into the next Tom Brady. It would be cool if we didn't do that.

AMEN. And can we also please not appoint a starting QB after spring practice and assess throughout the first 2-3 games who might be the best fit for the season?

Again, Kern played well, particularly under the circumstances, but if we can't find a better QB in the portal (or maybe elsewhere), then we are in trouble.

I hope he returns. I just don't want to read a ton of posts between now and then proclaiming him to be the missing piece to WFU football success. Because he is not. There is, whether we know what it is or not, a reason Clawson et al concluded he was not QB1. And I promise it's not because DC is fucking with us or would rather play his guy than win. Clawson picked the wrong horse, but not without some rationale.

I don't GAF about Mason Garcia's recruiting profile; if there was a QB worse than Griffis this year, it was Garcia.

His season stats:

48 for 95 408 yards 1 TD 2 INTs 34.6 QBR

His game log is atrocious

His final appearance for ECU was in an epic 10-7 ECU loss to Charlotte:

4 for 14 19 yards; 5 rushes for 12 yards QBR of 3.1 (on a 100 scale).

I think you’re arguing against a straw man.

In a perfect world we pay $2 million or so and get the Washington State QB. But since that seems unlikely, the best realistic option is probably Kern, a decent transfer, and two freshmen (Gilliam and Hecklinski) with the sincere hope that somebody beats out Kern and earns playing time.

If we don’t get Kern, I’d argue we probably need two transfers to have some sort of depth in the room.

Now whether Kern is interested in coming back after earning two degrees to compete for PT when it is obvious he hasn’t resonated with the coaching staff in the past seems like a legitimate concern. Which is why we would probably need to pay him, given his other options.

I agreed with your previous post, but I don't buy the assumption that Clawson's rationale was sound. If Clawson course corrects, he and Ruggiero could build a better offense around Kern.

I don't want to overhype or anoint Kern either. But I wouldn't give up on the season if they can't or don't want to attract a big money NIL QB. I'd be just as worried that Clawson chooses the wrong guy out of the portal over Kern as I was that he chose Griffis over Kern.

People that are thinking about the "QB of the future" have not kept up with the times in college football very well. In the world of NIL and the transfer portal, the "QB of the future" doesn't really exist anymore for most schools. So let's just worry about the QB for 2024. And like it or not, Michael Kern would be the betting favorite to be the best option we are going to have for a 2024 starting QB.

All of you fully aboard the transfer QB train are fine, but at least provide some options that you think would be both realistic and a clear upgrade to Kern as they enter the portal this week.
