Next Year's FB Team + Scholarship Tracker |

I just got home and watched Dave's presser. I was very, very pleased to hear his comments. He seems to have done some soul-searching and appears to have embraced NIL for what it is and mentioned more than once that the model going forward is not the model used in the past. Younger players will play much more quickly. I also found his comments, basically assuring Hecklinski (sp) that his four years of potential playing time would not be impacted by the portal pick-up, very interesting. Obviously, for that type of assurance, Clawson feels he's hit a home-run with this kid.

What really stood out was that the NIL was used to keep many current players and that Dave said several times that this time last year we were getting absolutely steam-rolled because we had no weapons at our disposal.

I also chuckled when Clawson said that practice is not always a great prediction of in-game performance. LOL. Ya think so Dave?!?!? :)

Great job RollTheQuadNIL and doing great work to keep many on our team. I think I spoke with you a few weeks ago or someone from your team. We're going to need even more $$$ to keep our team competitive.

Would it be reasonable to conclude, from his collective comments, that Dave did not offer $ to Williams or Banks?

Some guys were here 4-5 years, got their degree, and it's time to move on

It's time for some younger guys to get their turn.

"We knew we wouldn't keep both Morin and Williams" ....was this he and other coaches policy/decision and not those of the players mentioned? Just sounded a little suspicious.

I agree we'll have to play more freshmen. But Clawson's "old" policy is still reflected in recruits' size. For example, a 6'6"" 275 OL will not be as ready for ACC play as a 6'6" 305 OL. And an interior DL who is 6'2" 245 will likely not play before a 6'2" 315 guy. Clawson cannot continue to recruit guys he can "develop" in a year or two. He needs them to be more ready on day 1 if they are to contribute early.

Is this scoop or speculation?

You realize the Oline and Dline guys that are big enough and skilled enough to play right away are probably the most sought after recruiting targets, probably after quarterbacks, right? We are always going to be a developmental program especially for the lines. Sure, there are probably big slobs we could recruit, but just going after "big" guys doesn't mean they can play a lick. You watch some of the lower division football and you'll see some "big" guys that are really just fat. I'm not saying I'm not on board with trying to get bigger guys through recruiting, but it's not easy to get good ones. What you call Clawson's "old" policy, is not a policy at all, it's one of the constraints of the job here. You don't think if we could get bigger lineman that are good players we wouldn't?

Both Morin and Key wanted to be "the man" in the slot for their final year of eligibility.

Morin committed to return first so he took the spot. My understanding is the staff was fine keeping either one... just couldn't lose both.

Somehow I just don’t think Wake is as hard as it used to be, kind of taking on that Ivy vibe of grade inflation because of how much parents are paying in tuition. The football team GPA is somewhere around 3.3-3.4 now from what I was told.

Maybe the football players are just smarter than you were

Clawson is watching the bowl games looking for 2 guys:

A DB who can cover.

An outside WR with some size/length.
The DB is Capone Blue. Not sure what the hold up is, but Clawson could not talk about him; he could talk about adding Bachmeier, Trost and Combs.

I thought he had a lot of candid comments addressing the bigger questions on this thread. Good read:

As mentioned, Morin and Key were a 1-in, 1-out prop. They would've kept both, but each felt that they wanted to be the man in their last year and both felt like slot was their best position (i.e. Morin didn't want to be on the outside). Morin committed first.

On the QB transfer: "And then the second thing is we wanted somebody who had played a lot in games who had a lot of game experience. And I just think sometimes what you get in practice isn't what you get in a game. And so if we could have somebody that had demonstrated success playing college football, and it really didn't matter the level whether it was FCS, group of Five, power Five, but we wanted somebody that had game experience, that had a proven ability in a football game against live competition that had had success. And it doesn't mean they haven't had some challenges, but those are people that know what it takes to prepare week in, week out."

I think that's a pretty direct acknowledgement of their misevaluation of the QB position this year, without throwing Griffis under the bus by name.

It also seems like a big part of their QB strategy was focused on retaining Hecklinski and they are really high on him. That's why they focused on a 1-year player at QB and they communicated with him before signing one to make sure there was no change in his opportunity here.

On the scholarship count, there were 2 players in the class that didn't sign yesterday (RB Clark and WR Reid) -- so they are officially greyshirts. Brings us into compliance with the roster. Since Clawson and RTQ mention taking 2-3 more transfers, it seems like there is an equal amount of attrition that we do not know about. Also this feels like it points to that attrition (Elmonus, Ranson, Chaney, etc.) - "but some of these guys have been here four-and-five years and didn't have established roles and we didn't invite them back that we already had kind of planned on them graduating and moving on and had replaced them with high school players already at some other positions."

So 1 thing, yesterday was the start early signing period, there is another signing period in February where guys in this recruiting class can sign. Just because guy's dont sign yesterday doesnt mean they are greyshirts. Greyshirts would come in after next season, and I haven't seen any indication that is happening (I mean apparently Conor mentioned something about these two recruits on his paysite yesterday, but with two kids in daycare I really can't commit to that right now, but if you can afford it you should, because Conor does a good job overall, even if he does write for duke, but thats another issue altogether.

It’s been awhile since Tabari Hines left for more playing time. Clawson and Ruggiero still haven’t figured out how to get two slots on the field together to maximize talent.

I get it when the TE was Cam Serigne. But this year, Hite only had 13 catches. Yes, the QB needed all the protection he could get but at least have a plan.

It's definitely bizarre. I still am sad & mad we never lined Key up in the backfield. Should have given him the Concepcion treatment that State employed to much success.

At Wake, creativity on offense is a premium and likely always will be. I think the 2023 staff gets a D- in this area but take Clawson at his word that he's rethinking things. I do think they were so shell shocked at the Griffis disaster they had no plan B.
