my mom has all these nice bottles of wine she and my dad got on various trips to Napa, Italy, France, etc that she took with her when they divorced. so slowly but surely we've been going through them. had a nice 1998 Merlot this summer and she's gonna bring a bottle or two to Christmas. she sent me some options: Chateauneuf du Papes from either 2000, 2003 or 2009 or a 98 Bandol. We will probably also open one of the Brunellos we brought home this year.
Go ahead and send me your address and I'll bring some ham over.

'bout to do a brewery tour with my mom and sister and drink a buncha beers, then finish the last bit of our Christmas grocery shopping then hopefully picking up my damn car from the dealer. then going to the Grove Park Friday night seafood buffet for dinner which I guess is a thing.

wife "on my way to meet you. did you figure out where we're eating?"
ITC "well, here are 6 kid/family friendly options within 5 min of my office"
wife "any other options?"

....

Somebody just brought a bottle of wine in from the 1980s from a winery I've never heard of and said they'd found it in their parent's basement when they were home for the holidays. They wanted to know how much I'd pay them for it because they "saw on the internet it could be worth $500." I asked how they'd been storing it, they said they didn't know and said they'd "take $250 for it." The label was falling off. They weren't pleased at all when I told them we wouldn't pay anything for it since we don't know what the winery is, we can't legally buy single bottles from random people, and without proof of storage no reputable source is going to buy it (so try to sell it online on an auction website if you really want to get rid of it...but aint nobody paying $250 for that shit either).

But...the internet!

Assuming your shop was their first stop, I guess they just don't know any better.

As far as the aging thing, I used to have a wine closet, enjoyed collecting and storing wines. Eventually realized there's no need to do this. Not that for really special wines it couldn't be fun. But, fortunately, there's an abundance of really good wine always available without any need to store/age it.

The number of conversations I've had about "just because the wine is older doesn't mean it's better/more expensive" is off the chart. People seem to believe that wine always improves with age and the reality is 99% of wine doesn't and is intended to be consumed in a year or two after it's produced.
Kind of related but I recently learned it's a fairly standard practice in restaurants for the sommelier to smash super expensive bottles once they're finished. Apparently it's not uncommon for people to dumpster dive restaurants with pricey wine selections and refill and cork expensive bottles to resell.
