WFU Hoops: '24-'25 Roster Construction Thread: +Spillers/Biliew/Cosby/Johnson/Abass

I think Boopie and Cam are both solid ACC players, but both fall apart when they're forcing offense

Yeah we really need them to break those habits of just going hero mode.

As pessimistic as I am right now I do think there will be some benefit to these guys playing a full season together if we keep the core group intact.

If I am Sallis I would think about coming back. He lost college experience with Gonzaga and Wake does not have a great record of success for early entry guys.

Harris is an interesting x factor for next year. I don't think, on average, 50-100 ranked guys end up being ready to play substantial roles during their freshman years (although their are certainly some notable exceptions). But if he can guard and just knock down jumpers, that would help us with 30-40% of the minutes at the 2.

imo, forbes greatest skill as a coach is his ability to make people think that his teams have a lot more talent than they do.

we need way better players, the role players we have (assuming sallis leaves) don't come close to resembling a core of a good team.

a lineup of boopie, pfred, hilreth, carr and reid; with juke harris and MMM off the bench sounds like maybe the least talented roster in the league to me (i suppose having two talented bigs who can play is pretty rare)

unfortunately our HS recruiting problems can't really be fixed quickly.

I know the general consensus is that it takes guys that are outside the top 50 or so some time to develop, but when I went back and looked at the last few years of ACC recruits the takeaway (for all recruits) was that if you weren't playing some minutes as a frosh, you probably wouldn't ever play decent minutes for that team.

Not sure I agree with this.

The 2022 team had an NBA first round pick (LaRavia), another player who is in the NBA (Alondes), a third player that has played in the G League and in Europe (Mucius) to go a long with a 1,000 point college scorer (Davien) and two solid college bigs in Dallas Walton and Khadim Sy. Plus, Monsanto and Hildreth. That team had talent.

2023 had Monsanto (until February). an ACC POY runner-up (Appleby), Davien (see above), an apparent 2024 NBA first round pick (Klintman), Hildreth and Carr.

2024 has a projected 2024 first round pick (Sallis - who was a HS five star), an LSU/Gonzaga transfer (Reid - a top 50 HS recruit), 6-10 senior 4 year college starter (Carr), Hildreth in his 3rd year, a 4 year college starting PG (Boopie), perhaps the best freshman three point shooter (Parker) and Monsanto.

Injuries messed with the last two teams, but there is plenty of talent on all three rosters. Definitely top 4 in the ACC.

I think the challenge is when you evaluate this team, there are things that like to like about each guy. Parker's shooting, Boopie & Sallis's scoring , Cam's defense and leadership, Reid & Carr's rebounding and size

However, when you look at us from a team perspective, we have glaring deficiencies each year. Good teams & good coaches find ways to compensate for those, but we seem to fail at that task year in & year out. So I don't know if we have a talent problem or a coaching & development problem. But Forbes isn't going anywhere for the foreseeable future, and I don't know if he's going to become a much better in-game coach at this point in his career

Would love to have at least two bigs for the 4 and 5 spots. Even with Carr and Reid back(hopefully), we have no capable back-ups. Marsh is what he is even after 3 seasons and Keller hasn't shown me that he will ever be an ACC level player. The general accepted thought is that the biggest improvement is between years one and two. I really hope he can emerge as an important part of the team but he still seems as weak and loss on inside defense and offense as he did on day one.

This is just making Forbes look even worse. How the eff does a team with LaRavia and Alondes plus experienced ACC-player Mucius and two solid bigs miss the NCAA tournament?

Wtf are we waiting on? Do we need Duke level recruits just to make the tourney?

Again, Forbes is great at identifying transfer players and maximizing them. But he's falling short on executing to win games.

Florida got both Samuel and Handlogten to transfer there last year so I'm hoping we can pull another high level big to pair with Reid

Appreciate your starting this thread. Now I want to know who’s going to start the 2024-25 schedule construction thread, which I’m almost as curious about.

Samuel and Handlogten play together a lot of minutes right? So Samuel is playing the 4?

Also, Wake already pairs a high level big with Reid. Andrew Carr is a good basketball player.

I agree on Carr. However, have noticed he has a tendency when 10' or so from the basket to drive into the paint attempting a layup etc. Many times not having the bulk of the competition his shot is rejected. Having above average accuracy, I would think he would shoot at an 80% clip from 10" or so out jumper.

For Forbes to get over the hump, we absolutely cannot be playing 6 players a game in March. In my mind, that requires keeping starters and rotation guys who want to stay and making some tough decisions for the players who have not been able to get on the court. Also no late defections a la Bobi leading to late additions would be ideal. We've had bad luck with injuries but the reality is we have too many guys who apparently aren't good enough to see the court in ACC play.

guys doing well at lower levels is not really the flex you think it is
