Damari Monsanto

Nah, fuck all that

Forbes should be equally committed to each teenager/young adult on the team. No single person or player deserves more love or less love than the next one.

I can find absolutely no fault with how Forbes has handled this situation. Whatever Damari's issues are or are not, Forbes is also entrusted with the other guys on the team. Why should Damari get special attention?

Again, I hate it for Damari because he is clearly going through some tough shit and I wish him nothing but the best, but Forbes isn't his therapist and he isn't paid to make sure Damari is ok mentally or physically anymore than he is paid to make sure all the other players on the team are well mentally and physically.

I don't understand this proclivity to ignore the other players because one player is going through something. Maybe that makes me an asshole? I don't know, but I think of myself as extremely empathetic but Damari's well-being doesn't trump the well-being of the other 14 or so dudes on the roster. He isn't any more special than anyone else.
That is a big strawman argument - no one is expecting Forbes to ignore other players or give special treatment to one of them.

Monsanto played at Notre Dame and then came back and refused to practice. He did not get hurt at Notre Dame. It's pretty damn diplomatic of Forbes to just say he couldn't practice and not go into details. Because obviously there are details. He just refused to show up for his senior night. Clearly there are some seriously not great details.

It is implied that making excuses for him, essentially lying to media questions about Monsanto instead of just giving a terse (but accurate) answer and moving on, would be treating him differently than other players. Everyone, from fans to media to Forbes, can come up with justifiable reasons for Damari's exit and how he chose to make it. But for a board that relentlessly complains about softball questions from the media and answers from coaches that are unacceptable, you get the tiniest bit of truth in an answer and everyone loses their minds. It's so hypocritical.

This is complete speculation
STAAAHHHPPPP

It's not.

I get wanting to protect a dude but y'all are being fucking ridiculous.

Extra Points:

After being expected to participate in the Senior Day ceremonies, Damari Monsanto did not do so. When asked about the situation postgame, Steve Forbes said, “He made the decision not to go through Senior Day. It was his choice. And that’s it.” ... Forbes was then asked whether Monsanto was still on the team, to which he responded, “I mean, he hasn’t practiced in two weeks now...It’s when we got back from Notre Dame. It’s gonna be hard for him to play if he can’t practice. ... Forbes chose not to answer a question regarding when/if he knew Monsanto would not walk for Senior Day.

Forbes has always been Damari’s biggest fan and I feel like we have learned over the years that the two of them have a lot of respect for each other, even though they butt heads frequently. Forbes’ statements today were pretty mild, I thought. He was respectful and didn’t throw him under the bus the way that most coaches would.

I feel for Damari and it’s a bummer he couldn’t get himself out there to celebrate an accomplishment and cheer on his teammates. But I get it.

Very true. People will say heinous shit about other people but the second you imply that maybe one of our players' behavior is out of line it is not acceptable for some (which I completely disagree with, especially in this era where players are provided with an endless amount of amenities [tutors, food/nutrition, weight room, training, an education most players would not be able to obtain, etc etc], not just NIL). Speaking of hypocrisy, you can't claim to care about some people's "mental health" and then be perfectly fine shitting on others' character 🤷‍♂️. Players have responsibilities to keep up with, if you don't keep up with them, that is on you, and you won't be on the team for long in any legitimate program.

If he couldn’t practice it’s not a criticism of him (or his character) to say he shouldn’t, or wasn’t able/ready to, play in the games.

I hope Damari can get his shit together…..but fuck this guy for being so selfish. You could see how much of a “me” guy he was by the way the ball stuck in his hand and how many bad shots he took. Yeah a few went in but most of them weren’t open, set shots! P Fred is going to be a better shooter when it’s all said and done anyway. Also, he won’t fuck up a team’s chemistry either. The fact that Forbes has put up with Damari’s shit for so long shows you how much he cares and how good of a guy Forbes is.

After Forbes threw Cam under the bus after UVA, he won’t say anything about Damari

This is complete speculation
I mean, that is verbatim what Forbes has said over the course of several interviews and pressers since Notre Dame. It’s only speculation if you think Forbes is lying.

I’m trying to consider what the majority think about how Forbes has handled this. I don’t think Damari trumps the team and if Forbes kicked him off the team, I trust him as the coach to make that decision. I think the part that I don’t love is that it seems clear that Forbes is mad at him from the comments and he’s leaving the door open for us to speculate on the why behind that. That is coupled with Damari’s behavior which I find erratic and dysregulated and consistent with someone who’s unable to control their emotions at the moment. He’s not his therapist as others have pointed out, but he is his teacher and in my mind has a kind of fiduciary relationship with his players. Maybe I’m soft but this is why I don’t like the statements Forbes has made. Calling out a guy in a press conference to motivate him is one thing. This is different. It feels a little like kicking him when he’s down and at this point, I’m not sure what the point of that is.

How would you expect him to respond when asked directly about it?
If he said "No comment" then that would have led to all kinds of wild speculation. All he said was that Monsanto made the choice not to participate in the Senior Day ceremony and that it is hard to be ready to play when you don't practice.
If he made other comments, I have missed them.

I think it was the ones the past two games like- he says he hurt his knee, etc. I would have preferred- “He hurt his knee and is no longer practicing with the team.” Maybe some think that’s dishonest, but I’d prefer that.

Ha no he cannot just lie. Having been involved in litigation in the ACC Forbes can absolutely not lie about Monsanto’s injury.

You either say “I’m not going to discuss Damari” which is going to be pretty incendiary, or you just make it clear it’s a player decision not a coach decision which basically ends all questions.

It’s a very difficult spot, Forbes handled it about as well as he could have.
