WFU Hoops: '24-'25 Roster Construction Thread: +Spillers/Biliew/Cosby/Johnson/Abass

As a genuine question, are we just posting the transfer portal announcement of any player that sounds interesting? How are you all deciding which ones are worth pointing out?

I assume it's too early for any of you to actually know which ones Wake is after
For me just ones interesting enough to point out - saw he was with AC a couple years ago on Delaware so it made it intriguing especially knowing we could use another forward

Hope Carr isn't going anywhere. Also, love the idea that everyone from England knows each other, like Hildreth and Williams went to the same HS. England has 56 million people.

I know you’re making a joke but the British elite hoops scene is probably quite small. In fact, Cam and Williams played together for Team GB in the U18 FIBA European Championship.

That's cool, no criticism from me keep posting as you like.

I just never know whether someone is posting a random one or one that they have reason to believe Wake is actually targeting.

I think the best thing we have going for us is how much Hunter's mom loves Wake and Winston. Wouldn't completely shock me if he comes back. I mean, if he gets a 1st round grade he's gotta go...But he starts looking like it'll be more second round- middle of second then I think he has something to think about.

We do this to ourselves...every...year...

I'd look at the poster to determine whether or not you should care.

For example, if I post something you can ignore it. If Pilchard posts something, it should warrant an audible "hmmm" (while rubbing your chin). If CrazyDeacFarts6969 posts something, you can take it pretty much as gospel.

In all seriousness, I think anyone posting anything now is just grasping at straws and excited about possibilities. I don't think we'll hear much until after the NIT (though I'm sure the staff is already reaching out).

yeah. also

this is the year we do something in the ACC tournament
I think if we let rj come back, he'll post completely reasonably this time

Yup and also speculation is fun....kinda like how we do.....all year long

I love Wake Forest basketball and want it to be as good as possible next season.

That said, I think it would be objectively be a mistake for Sallis to return to Wake. He's reasonably being projected as a late first round pick. He already played at a first team All-ACC level, and he has an NBA skill set and NBA size. If it was a situation like Bobi where he was a potential draft pick but needed to put up the numbers to prove it, coming back makes sense. Considering he already put up the numbers and has proven himself at this level, I just don't see the argument that coming back would be the best thing for Sallis' future.

I'm pretty sure they do, coincidentally, know each other. England is a big country but the basketball community in England is much more small/tight.

This.

He gone. Not sure why we're even talking about it.

I assume he is gone as well, but stranger things have happened and is no longer viewed as a 1st round pick. 2nd round is always a crapshoot...we have had a number of guys at the same level not get drafted at all.

yep with the caveat that 1) he could get a much lower projection post-workouts depending on which guys do/don't declare and 2) I have no idea what type of money a guy like him could get for a year in NIL world

If NIL matters, it is almost certain he could get more money somewhere else. I think Wake will make a competitive offer, but there are a ton of schools who could outbid Wake if Sallis' goal was to stay in college and make the most money he could.

also, while NIL may be competitive with what he could earn year 1 in the NBA, the real goal is to get to the second NBA contract, and you can't get to the second one until you complete the first. better to get started on reaching that goal as soon as possible.

IF (and huge if) Sallis is even considering returning to college, I think it would be at Wake. From his comments and some from his mom, Wake has been a great place for him to grow and it seems like they had a bad experience at Gonzaga. I think that make them slow to jump into any situation just based on money. Now if Wake's offer isn't competitive, that's different, but I imagine if he's entertaining staying in college, the price tag to stay at Wake is lower than going to an unknown situation.

Age is a big factor in the NBA's evaluation of draft candidates. Hunter Sallis is the HS class of 2021. If he stays in colege after this seasonn (which he won't), Sallis will be in his 4th year out of HS for the 2025 NBA draft. That's is not just a viable position to be in for an NBA prospect.

Also, people don't get the NBA compensation sysem. Sure, maybe a WF NIL offer could match what Sallis would make next year as a late first round or early second round pick. That analysis doesn't tell the story.

How much NIL will WF offer in 2025-6 and each year after when Sallis is out of eligibility? Among other reasons, players want to get to the NBA as soon as possible to get to their 2nd contract (the non rookie wage scale contract). That's where the big money is; even if you are an NBA bench piece. Whenever a WF player is a legit NBA prospect, some here never understand how all of the economics slant in favor of going pro.

To be clear, I am not suggesting I thought Sallis would stay (or should). Just pointing out the fallacy of "Wake can use NIL to keep him."
