NIT 2024: Next in a Long Line of Basketball Disappointments

I don't "actually like" Groves either.
Hell, I don't even "like" Spry.

But I've been to plenty of games at the Joel and sat in plenty of different seats/sections to know that it is a good arena in which to watch a basketball game.

Also, just going to connect you to your e-BFF here, Cameron Indoor is a fucking dump. So is Fenway Park. Old doesn't mean good. It's shit. They are both shit.
Cameron, Fenway, and Wrigley are dumps. People show up though. And I’m not suggesting we should have built an old arena. We should have built a new one.

They are different sports. I remain surprised that Wake people think the a massive arena makes sense for our fanbase. In football, we likely have one of the smallest p5 stadiums in the country. Which is the correct move.
NO FUCKING SHIT

They are different sports?!?!?!

Tell me more!

12-14k (I can't recall the number) isn't a 'massive' arena, btw. How many people live within 40 miles of LJVM? You think too small. And we all know DR's limitations and smallness, so let's not get into those...

But the Joel isn't 'massive'. That's just not true for a P5 arena. Vanderbilt's arena holds 14,326 FFS.

So just for reference, and I’m not saying this is a perfect arena, ball state built a 10K-ish seat arena in the early 90s for like 10 million.
But did Ball State have an arena that only opened 5 years prior available to play in right down the street? I don’t disagree that the Joel isn’t ideal, but in the late 80s (it opened in ‘89, right?), I think it probably made the most sense at the time to take advantage of playing in a city owned arena. And once that was done, the die was cast for sometime.

In a non-NIL world, we probably would spend the money to reconfigure the Joel, but I don’t think that’s the best use of our available funds at this point.

The App st fans around me were actually ....good fans? They were loud and cheered on their team and didn't get in my face. There was a ten year old kid sitting behind who was an app fan who screamed "What the heck!!" everytime they missed a shot. I respected that little dude bc i've certainly been there plenty of times with the Deacons over the years. Gimme a bunch of App St fans over a bunch of tarheel fans every day of the week.

I can’t comment on wake politics in the late 80s but I don’t think we should have bought the Joel in the 2000s.

The Fighting Wes Millers advance in OT vs San Francisco on a ridiculous 3 pointer.

see my ninja edit please

we don't have a 'very large' basketball arena for the level we play at

You. Are. Wrong.
I disagree. We are a small school, which is great (!), and as a result, have a smaller fan base (also great - love you all). We needed an arena that reflected how uniquely awesome we are.

He looked like a fool from tip to buzzer, but correct me if I’m wrong aren’t his comments about the refs? He is saying the refs obviously aren’t any good and thus why they aren’t reffing in the NCAAT.
That was my take, but still a bad look full of sour grapes

I was seeing the Deacs at the Joel long before the 2000s

at least get your damn timeline correct, BSD. Jesus fucking tap dancing Christ...

We can all agree that based on current dynamics in college sports Wake should aim for a somewhat smaller arena when it's time to replace/upgrade the Joel.

There are a ton of reasons, political, financial, etc., why we play in the Joel and why it's configured the way it is and if you know anything about the history there you know it could not realistically have been otherwise. It's been a very good home court for us and has basically nothing to do with our long-term troubles in bball.

You've convinced yourself and you aren't even open to other opinions at this point. Good luck.

Ummm did we not buy the Joel this century? That was my point. Maybe it was in the last 10 years??

I swear BSD is just DR’s second account. Just rehashing the same talking points over and over again

No. We don’t share the same opinions on a number of things. We just happen to have agreed over the years that the Joel was not right for wake. Does the Joel even matter in the current landscape? I’m not so sure.
