WFU Hoops: '24-'25 Roster Construction Thread: +Spillers/Biliew/Cosby/Johnson/Abass

I saw two guys who are currently in the portal at the game tonight....don't get too excited though bc it was Davion Bradford and Lucas Taylor. Cool of them to come watch their old teammates play though.
Great spot. Understand Taylor being around. He's from Raleigh, but Bradford was enrolled at NM State and is from Missouri. Kind of crazy that he would find his way back to W-S, but kudos to him from supporting the Deacs.

I've heard that Hunter and Efton are both very happy with their move to Wake and playing for Forbes

NBA sounds like a bigger threat than either transferring. But I guess you never know if someone backs up the brinks NIL truck.

Reid is worth more to WF than almost any other program. WF is so thin upfront. Efton is a quality big, but there are a lot of talented players in college basketball. If Sallis stayed in college basketball (dubious), he would be far more likely to draw multiple lucrative NIL offers, but sounds like he and his family adore WF. Also, WF has the donors that have taken care of our own. Not super-concerned about losing any of our key guys to the portal/NIL. NBA for Sallis would be the primary concern.

outside of their size, appleby and boopie are completely different players, imo.

appleby was super quick and had amazing vision. people always talk about marsh alley-oops but the super hard part about that is getting the defense into a 1-on-2 situation where they a big has to either leave the guard unopposed or help off their man in the dunker spot. getting the defense into that situation is not easy.

boopie is a good scorer and particularly good at getting off / making contested shots. he's not a natural playmaker* (which imo is not something that can be taught easily). i think he'd do really well off-ball, in particularly attacking closeouts because he is pretty explosive with his first step.

*i think there are three major aspects to being a "playmaker."

1/ put pressure on the defense (i.e. get players outside of the guy guarding you to have to react)
2/ keeping the option to either shoot or pass as long as possible (it felt like our guards, inc. boopie, were in scoring mode by default until that option was blocked)
3/ being a good passer (seeing the floor, being able to anticipate what players are gonna do, actually making accurate passes)

i would say appleby was good at all three, elite at #1. alondes williams was also good at all three and elite at #2 ands #3. optimistically, you could say boopie is approaching average at #1, maaaaybe #3.

Is anyone else worried about needing to raise a decent chunk of NIL to keep Efton? While bunch of Power 5 programs could sure use a solid starting center.

I don't know that he would want to fight the waiver thingy again. It was brutal for him and Wake fans!

If only we had an alumnus who was undersized but known for being super-quick and creating a record number of steals against taller, stronger guards.
Which one? The one who is #5 all-time in steals in the ACC or the one who is #3 all-time in steals in the NBA?

Rob McCray announced he’s declaring for the nba draft
Oh wow. Have advocated for McCray here, but geez that seems a step too far. OGB thinks McCray would struggle to be 10th man on a solid power conference team. Think the truth is somewhere between those two extemes.

Would be hilarious if another WF recruit/player made it to the NBA while no one on regular season 1st place UNC right now or current ACC Champ NC State can sniff the league.

Commit to WF, and our bubblicious program will groom you for the NBA, via NIT level play.

What if McCray tests well and sneaks into the second round. NC State shit is dead and now it’s Wake Forest shit

CP3 got stronger because he had to.

Boopie's quickness can be an asset on defense to help overcome his lack of size, but he's a guy bigger guards can absolutely post up or shoot over.

CP3 is/was great, but he certainly had trouble with bigger guards (Deron Williams & Jameer Nelson, for example).
Jarrett Jack and that whole backcourt is the one that always seemed to be a problem for CP and those teams

In that interview Coach seemed confident they can compete in the NIL market with anyone. He made it clear this is the first offseason that is true.

Agree with both of these, but I think more important is that Chris Paul is a historic basketball outlier, what he is continuing to do at his size is unprecedented in basketball. Nobody should be compared to Chris Paul.

I'd be very surprised if either transferred. I would also be surprised if Hunter did not declare for the draft. I think Efton should stay another year.
