WFU Hoops: '24-'25 Roster Construction Thread: +Spillers/Biliew/Cosby/Johnson/Abass

Part of being a good "history guy" is knowing when to not lean on history. The landscape is so different now that comparing the conference record of 2024 Wake to 30+ years ago makes no sense. Comparing conference records in the same year doesn't even make much sense. That looks like some nonsense talking point from the AD to obscure reality. But if Forbes wanted to bring compare old conference records, he could have at least used that to talk how doing poorly in the non-con raised the bar for conference play.

Forbes is also a salesman. He’s going to find the nuggets that paint his program in a good light and try to make those part of the narrative. I don’t think he actually believes the ACC and NCAA are comparable to what they were in 2004 or 1997 but it’s still his job to sell it

Sure. He's got to sell the program but that type of comparison only shows how things have changed, not what Wake has accomplished. Forbes should look at that stat and see how much harder he has to work than Odom and Prosser did to earn a bid. I hope he didn't come to Wake to go .500 and get a #7 seed because he saw the 2001 Wake team did.

You could read his comments as making that point - him saying that the same conference record that got us in the tourney in years past doesn't do it anymore... So we have to realize that and do better in the non-conference - and/or even better in the conference...

But that's not what he said. He prefaced that part by saying, "Do I think we were good enough? Yeah. I'm a history guy." He pointed to history to say Wake should made the tournament because 9 past Wake NCAA teams did worse than .550 in conference.

Yeah, he also has to defend the strength of the conference.

And immediately after saying that he said the situation has changed and they need to get ahead of it

oh wow, didn't realize so many were leaving Miami.

Do Pack and Omier still have eligibility left?

edit: looks like they were COVID freshmen like Andrew Carr so they could come back for one more year

George is probably leaving for the draft. He’s in some first round mocks.

Feel like Forbes referencing the ACCs past level of respect is especially dumb right now when the current iteration of the ACC probably won’t exist in 3-4 years. We aren’t likely to return to a 7 bid conference, so best to work with current reality rather than pining for the past when a .500 conference record would get a bid.
