WFU Hoops: '24-'25 Roster Construction Thread: +Spillers/Biliew/Cosby/Johnson/Abass

so frustrating that we had two players that suddenly blew up in the NBA draft process despite not really doing much in college (Klintman and to a lesser extent LaRavia).

so the fanbase, me included, pined for "good college players with no NBA future" as a fix to the above problem. So we got Boopie and Carr. And now since Boopie doesn't have NBA potential he's transferring for the most money and Carr apparently is some closeted Villanova super fan (with their awful coach). just fuck us. we can never win.

Forbes has coached WF for four years. His first year was a COVID disaster and DM leftover shit show. He just missed the NCAAT on two of next three years, and as mentioned above, injuries impacted each of the last two years.

No one has said Forbes is getting a decade to make the tournament. Would be ready to move on if WF was at the bottom of the conference. Who do you want to hire after paying Forbes his eight-figure buyout and who is paying for this new coach?
Be prepared to be stunned. WF already extened Forbes through at least 2029. His buy-out is big, and the WF money loves him. There is no avenue for to WF buy-out Forbes contract and offer big contract to the next candidate (as in, where is the money going to come from that will write an 8 figure check to pay Forbes to leave? -- the WF money is busy funding NIL and facilities upgrades; there's no pot of money left to throw at Forbes and another coach).

The only ways that Forbes isn't coaching WF next year are:

  • Health
  • Scandal
  • Forbes wins so big that another school offers him
If WF has a year anything close to the last three, he will be back in 2025-6 and the year after that.
So he won't get a decade, but he will at least get 6 years, even if he doesn't make the tournament. Your issue is not with MDMH's point, but his exaggeration?

Is the search function too challenging for a scholar like strickland33?

yea, see you're not doing yourself any favors here

it's a weird shtick, honestly, but I suppose that in this time of adult male loneliness and the implosion of Wake Forest sports that you should do you

The point is that people act like Forbes somehow lacks the gravitas to take a team to the NCAAT. There isn't some magic formula that Forbes lacks.

Forbes already took two ETSU teams the NCAAT (against a bunch of SOCON coaches that are now power conference coaches), and he was a little injury luck and a game away making the NCAAT twice in the three years since there was any hope for WF to field a competitive team. It's just not that easy to coach college basketball, and he is on the verge. Not ready to start over. If you think the Forbes is a lost cause, who do you want to hire and explain how he now has a better resume than Forbes did when he took the WF job.

Also, for those that think there is no hope if Cam and/or Carr leave. Well, take a look at the garbage roster WF had in 2021. #175 in the country 6-16 (3-16 in the ACC; a complete mess). That off-season WF, added five transfers, all of whom contributed, two have now played in the NBA, and a freshman, Cam Hildreth, and that WF team jumped 140 spots in one year. So, even with the departures off the most recent roster, WF is in a better spot than it was heading into the 2022 season, and if WF can slightly improve, next year could be an NCAAT team next year.

Stop asking me who I want to replace Forbes. That’s not how jobs or coaching searches work. If he can’t make the tournament then we have to replace him with someone else. There are no guarantees. Forbes was a high quality candidate and if he can’t get the job done we will hire a new high quality candidate. It’s a job - we aren’t married. The debate is how long until we make a change, not if.

This is really an unbelievable statement.

Pilchard is going into hyperdrive overtime mode.

This isn’t a hypothetical and we aren’t acting “as if”. He hasn’t done it. That’s an unavoidable fact, no matter how you might like him or how painful another coaching search might be.

So, you just want to keep firing coaches every four years (doesn't matter how close they came to making the tournament, and it doesn't matter who is hired) and hope that someone takes the team to the NCAAT at some point?

This. We aren’t making the hire. Someone gets paid to do that. We are above average consumers of sports. We are way above average consumers of Wake Forest sports. We are the ones who make the donations and buy the tickets. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters are results. The results that matter in college bball are making the NCAAT (unless you’re Dino Gaudio for some reason). I don’t care if you’re Santa Claus. If you can’t make the tournament then you didn’t do your job - and it’s a very, very high paying job which means that not fulfilling your job duties warrants you being relieved of that job.

Coming close doesn’t matter. You either make it or you don’t. And we weren’t as close as people like to rant about. We have not been in the First Four out under Forbes. It isn’t like our bid was stolen by a mid-major Cinderella conference champion.

Yes!? Again - it’s a job. There are goals to meet and timelines to meet those goals. Your only logical rebuttal is disputing what the goals are, and how long the timelines are.

Yeah but this was the huge problem when "we" fired Dino. Dino was fired and then Hatch FUCKED Shaka and we had no replacement so we ended up with [Redacted]. The firing decision is not done in a vacuum, or at least it shouldn't be. It's a legit question, is Forbes better than his likely successor? If yes we should keep Forbes until we are likely to get a replacement that is better than him.

It absolutely does. 150th and 27th are not the same in an honest evaluation of the program. I think the divide between the absolutists and the rest really creates a discussion from two polar opposites that has no chance of coming to a conclusion.

That's ridiculous. If Forbes last two years were like Kenny Payne's at L'ville. Of course, he should be fired. There are coaches that clearly aren't building their programs and have no clue how to build a roster (WF had two before Steve Forbes), this isn't that. Forbes has shown that he can start with nothing and build a roster. That means something. To act like there is no difference between a coach that takes a program from bottom of the conference to top half and on the verge on the NCAAT twice in his first four years, and a coach that goes 4-28 and 8-24 makes no sense.

not trying to be the message board police, but i think there are a lot of complicated factors that go into these athletic department decisions that are easy for a fan on a message board to overlook

In some ways what has happened the past 3 seasons is almost worse than not even being close to making the tournament. It is incredibly frustrating to continually come so close yet have it snatched away at the end of the season.
