Basketball Recruiting Megathread 1.0 has run its course

You're missing my point. I loved Josh and what he did for Wake. But he wasn't some highly ranked super all star can't miss recruit.

I never said we needed a can't-miss recruit in 2013, I said we need a star player. If we can get that with a Josh Howard or Tim Duncan type, great. If we can get that with a CP3 or AFA type, also great. The only statement to which I took issue was that the 2013 class was neither "key" nor "critical."

We are not going to wait on Gill and McClinton who both are waiting on UNC.

We need a 2g and a big man in 2013. We need highly rated players that can come in and make a contribution. By then our program guys will be coimg along well.

BJ Ajay is a big body guy that is interesting.

We have some solid players coming in that will get better, but we are a long way away from being competitive. It sucks

Hope this is not "Haas", but does Roy use Santa to deliver cash to recruits?

I thought McClinton wanted to come but had not been offered yet.

Totally disagree. I don't even consider 2013 a key recruiting year. 2014 yes, but you generally don't bring in superstars the year afer a 6-man class. Our 2012 class has two legitimate frosh starters in Thomas and Codi. Plus three solid rotation guys with one likely project (washington). We'll only lose one guy off next year's team (CJ). Just don't see how 2013 is critical. We'll be very good if we pick up nobody in 2013.

Totally disagree. First of all, every single year is a key recruiting year until this program gets back on its feet.

Additionally, I think even the BuzzWaits would agree that Buzz needs to make the tournament at least once by the end of year 4 (2013). We're not going dancing this year. I think it's a stretch to think we're making it next year. So 2013 is a massively important year for this program.

Finally, saying that the 2012 class has "two legitimate frosh starters" is pretty misleading. It's only true because, right now, we only have two legitimate starters total, regardless of year (Travis and CJ). Imagine if Codi and Devin were the 2009 class. Codi might have been a 6th man type guy like CJ was, and Devin would never have seen the floor.

It may be misleading but absolutely impossible to know how many "legit freshmen starters" WF has in the 2012 class until they get to campus. Don't think it's really that difficult to imagine two of the guys being legit ACC players right out of the box. Even if it is for a team that has struggled the last few years.

It's interesting that when talking about next year's team everyone is ready to put Thomas in the starting lineup. I would think Moto would be the easiest fit and higher rated than Thomas by just about everyone.

Thomas is over 6'9", big bodied, and is supposedly a very good rebounder. We need that presence in the middle more than anything else. While CMM and Moto are probably better players at their positions, it comes down to need (although I do think CMM will start early, if not immediately).

Yeah, I see that point. I still think my best guess (not necessarily my hope) for the starting lineup on opening day next year:

Chennault (hopefully CMM)
Harris
McKie
Moto
Derosiers

Devin is our only rebounder who ready to play. We need him more than a player similar to Travis.

I agree it would be nice, and I hope Devin comes in and is great right away. It just seems like people are making him out to be a better player than he is, just because he fits a need. Then again, perhaps I'm getting too caught up in the ratings.

I agree on tempering some expectations for Devin, but most of his scouting reports are for an undersized 6'7'' post with a high motor and good skills. If he really is 6'9'' plus as being reported that will make a huge difference.

Yea I think that is the thing. Most recruiting websites pretty much stop grading classes after the summer of the kids junior year since HS ball can be so hit or miss when you have teams with multiple top 100 kids playing teams with one or none, just doesn't make for good evaluation. Devin seems to have peaked after the AAU season died down and has grown in height and skill since the last time he has been evaluated. Literally everything that has come out on him in the last 2 months has been extremely positive which bodes really well for his future. Tons of kids mature as HS seniors and play well above their supposed recruited ranking in college.

And talking about where kids are ranked by these sites there is always a touch of pro potential mixed in when rating a kid. A guy who is 6'7, really skilled in the post and who plays really fundamentally sound just isn't going to be ranked as high as a fantastic 6'9 guy who has tons of potential but really is not built to play the structured college game yet he thrives in the run and gun AAU scene (AAU vs. HS is a whole other topic to go off on but I don't want to do that here. AAU can show you the potential of a guy but really doesn't always show how polished or college ready a kid is.

This is where you see the different rankings with a guy like Moto and a guy like Devin. Moto is a 6'6 swing guy who has shown amazing flashes at times and can run/jump with anyone. And he weighs about 210 to boot. He' a full grown man already. But he isn't nearly as polished as he could be. Devin seems to be the opposite of that and is going to be ready to go out of the box. His listed height and weight seems to vary from 6'7 205 to about 6'9.5 230. Big difference there and will tell alot about the amount of success the 2012-2013 WF team will have.

The 2011 class has a ton of potential but also several guys who are highly regarded based on that potential and are no where near an ACC player yet. It will come down to the work ethic of the players themselves to see where they end up as the talent is there. Hopefully the coaching staff is able to get them to play to the best of their ability.

Sorry for the rant/Lectro like post but even as a current NCSU student i've still been a WF fan since the days of king of Pumpfake himself Mr. Shoemaker so I get a little fired up. Think both WF and NCSU have a really bright future which is something that neither of have been able to say in a couple of years.

OldGoldBeard--

Pretty good point made but I don't know how we can assume that none of the class of 2012 are future 1st round picks. Nobody would have thought Josh Howard was a future 1st round pick.

Actually, a fair amount of folks thought he was special before he showed up on campus.

Or one could and we could peak with an NIT bid.

Let me flip it then:

Assuming in 2013 we have the following:

1: CMM, TC, Fields
2: Fisher, Moto, CMM, Roundtree
3: McKie, Roundtree, Cavanaugh
4: Thomas, Cavanaugh, Green
5: Desrosiers, Thomas, Washington

Where would you plug in the elite future NBA 1st rounder? The 5? I don't think it is going to be easy to talk a 2 into coming after the 2011 and 2012 classes bring 2 1/2 shooting guards in Fisher, Moto, CMM, and Roundtree.

I'm obviously not opposed to bringing in a Rodney Rogers or Tim Duncan - but when I eyeball that roster, I don't find it critical.
