In this thread we lay out out expectations (or opinions) record-wise for the next 3 years. Assume 30 games per year and state post-season expectations as well. This will be a good thread to search in the future...

2011-2012 14-16 (5-11)...no postseason

2012-2013 17-13 (7-9)....NIT

2013-2014 21-9 (9-7)....NCAA

I feel like this is an honest and realistic path that we should attempt to be on the next three years. It gives Coach [Redacted] a chance to put in his system and have his kids for 2-3 years. If [Redacted] can do this then I would be happy with his first four years (obviously not happy with this past year in itself). It will then be on him to continue to improve and advance in the tournament.

Personally, if he does not make at least the NIT by year 3 then I think he should be fired. This is of course assumes that he improves enough next year to get a 3rd year. If we don't get to at least 13 wins then he should not be retained, unless if unforeseen circumstances occur.

Thoughts?

That's roughly what I expect given our current coaching situation. I would be far, far from satisfied with those results.

I'm expecting something like

2011-12: 12-20
2012-13: 16-14
2013-14: 19-10 and on the bubble of the tournament

And that's where the danger comes. If he makes the tournament that year, even if it's barely into the tourney and y'all do nothing there, you're inclined to keep him. That sets the program on a path of mediocrity for years. Seen it with Herb, I'm sure it would've happened with Sidney this next season if he had been retained (and remade his staff). And if I recall correctly Bzzz was brought in to perform in March, not keep getting into the tournament then losing in the first and second rounds.

This program was put in shambles. It takes time to rebuild.

If we don't do well in 12-13 or if we win less than 12-14 games, we should have a new coach.

We can debate all we want about how far we have fallen and what our expectations should be, but we need to be realistic about this. Anything else is setting yourself up for disappointment imo.

Regardless of record I think...no postseason, NIT, NCAA is what we need to do.

Before you judge my expectations I expect you to lay out your own.

I'm not commenting on your expectations...I'm commenting on the results you'll accept and be content with.

You're saying that you think Bzz has done a good enough job if we make it back to the NIT by year 3. Sorry, I can't buy into accepting that as the goal.

2013-2014 is the one that matters. If we are a bubble team, regardless of whether or not we make it, the season will have been a failure (short of unexpected problems of course). We will have an extremely veteran team, with 4-5 seniors, 3-4 juniors, and 3-4 sophomores.

I can be realistic about expectations without them being acceptable. The two aren't related. I agree, that with Bzz as coach, just making it to the tourney in 4 years is a realistic expectation. That doesn't mean I won't be disappointed. If you're not disappointed with the expectations you laid out, then it's just more evidence of where our fanbase has fallen.

I'd rather take a "re-do" on the coaching hire and suffer 1-2 more bad seasons if there's a light at the end of the tunnel with another coach than watch Bzz "lead" us to a NCAA tournament in his 4th year while the Wake fanbase becomes more and more LOWF, celebrating being on the bubble or squeezing into the tourney like we're Colorado. We've got NC State fans warning us here on this very thread as to what can happen when a school and fanbase settle for mediocrity.

If we take another redo right now then our expectations would be worse than they are now because we would fire the entire staff and have to start all over again with recruiting.

Ron Wellman hired Jeff [Redacted] for the long run. This year was completely unacceptable and everybody understands that. He was hired to get results for the long run and I will wait to see if he can produce before saying that he sucks or can't coach.

Not that anyone cares about the NIT, but the thing is it's much harder to make that field than it used to be. Before the NCAA bought it out, the NIT tried to get "name" schools that they thought would sell tickets. The tourney field was money driven.

Now, with the guaranteed bids to the small conference regular season winners who lost in the their tournaments, there aren't that many spots available. This past NIT saw only 19 teams get "at large" bids. Before the NCAA takeover, there were 40 teams getting at large bids.

Wonder if we missed the NIT next year but had a decent record and the CBI extended an invite, would we accept it. Oregon was the only "BCS" team that accepted a CBI bid this year and they won it.

Pretty much guarantee we won't make the NIT next year, but I do think we should accept a CBI bid. Vital to get these guys as much experience as possible.

Yeah I accidentally excluded any other tournaments aside from the NIT and NCAA. If we get extended a CBI bid then we should take it. Hell we would certainly deserve it imo.
