Leave it to DiFi

Good for her. Most Americans and almost all police chiefs and cops believe the same way.

Are people opposed to a ban on assault weapons? What is the reason someone would need one of those guns? They were not contemplated by the founders, so spare me the 2nd Amendment mumbo jumbo. You want a strict constructionist? Get me on the bench and you all will be armed with muskets.

Because you need to be able to arm yourself like Rambo to be able to survive in the world today.

Duh.

Sorry, when I'm on the bench, this all that will be allowed:

b/c so many crimes are committed by people with legally obtained automatic weapons? best to punish them with legislation.

Some of the absolute worst ones are. It's why hand grenades aren't legal. I don't think people think there'd be a massive upswing of petty hand-grenade-related crimes if they were readily available. But the crimes that were committed would be catastrophic.

(elk, no need to go into the actual law, and the subtle differences :D).

But apparently the denizens of The Tunnels who have responded so far have little cognizance of current gun laws and nomenclature, and I have all afternoon since it rained and I cannot mow my yard...

Because it's simply a cosmetic, feel-good ban that has zero practical effect. The previous "assault weapons" ban was on "guns that looked scary." A bunch of politicians got in a room and decided that certain things looked scary on guns and attempted to ban them with legislation. So what happened was manufacturers made slight modifications and the guns continued to be made in spite of the ban.

Moreover, that is all an assault weapon is-- a scary looking weapon. Assault weapon does not mean an automatic weapon. A semi-automatic weapon does not mean an automatic weapon. Most of the people supporting this legislation think that you can still just go out and buy a machine gun at will. No doubt these are the same people who think that guy in Colorado lit up people in that theater using a machine gun. He didn't. The guns that the public purchases are one bullet per trigger pull.

I think it's fine to debate the necessity of a 100 round drum. The problem is nobody is going to introduce any legislation to just ban 100 round drums, or in general cap mag capacity at, say, 20 rounds. Too many hands are in the pie, and there are too many ignorant opinions out there about guns and gun owners.

Elkman, you should really do an entire thread lecture on how guns work, single action vs double action, auto vs. semi-auto, semi-auto vs. revolver, bolt action vs. pump action, etc...

Instead, who wants to get in a round of clays on Friday 9/21 before homecoming?

http://www.shanessportingclays.com/

I have never been there, but will be in town for homecoming and to visit my mother. I would love to put a name with a face...
