you can be scared of a dog that is ultimately unable to inflict fatal wounds. sure, it can bite you and leave a mark... but you can throw the dog off/kick it/hurt it more than it can hurt you.
 
How much would a lawyer cost here? Meeting with the lawyer to go over all the details. Having to show up to court multiple times. Other additional work? Can't see it being any cheaper than $2000. Maybe a $1000 if we got a very cheap lawyer.

We're then fighting for something like best case scenario, we get $500 if he's not awarded any damages. I agree we wouldn't lose $19,000, but we have no idea what he does and doesn't have and could possibly prove beyond normal wear and tare on one item for a $1000.

End of the day, just not worth the time or headache for a few hundred dollars.

Yeah, place looked pretty nice. We spent an entire day cleaning it up including painting some of the walls. He claims he needs new hardwood floors because we got paint all over the floors. I'm sure he could very easily find a couple spot where paint is on the ground or even have fake pictures where he dropped paint on the floors and we'd have no way to disprove it.
 
Maybe Waldo Moricle would take the case on for you.
 
Without knowing anything else or anything about DC landlord tenant law I would say its worth an initial consultation. It sounds like there is potentially fraud/theft/etc. those could result in punitive damages as well as him paying lawyers fees.

this day is going by ridiculously slowly and has been a humongous exercise of 'hurry up and wait'.


also, i have a lump charge on a credit card (plane tickets and dog surgery). it bothers me, but the only way to make it go away is take a chunk of savings to pay it off completely. i also don't like that because i like my savings to stay over a certain number. i'm too impatient to wait for pay day.
eff it, i think i'm going to pay it off. i hate having that linger overhead.

Im with this. If what you say is true, there are certainly enough lawyers in this world to at least consult with and have you spill this all out to. The fact that you might need to miss work, fraudulent claims, etc... might make it worth it. Not only could you get your deposit back but also significantly more.
 
Finally got my kitchen finished. Don't have "before" pics but believe me, it was in desperate need of remodeling.
