NCAA Tournament Discussion Thread - One Shining Moment - UConn Huskies

I know he's not old AF, but 90's Shaq would still be nasty in today's NBA in spite of his complete inability to shoot the basketball from anywhere outside the paint.

Some guys are just physical beasts, regardless of era.

Crazy to think he played 3 years in college and LSU couldn't even get to the Sweet 16.

Other dudes like that: Wilt, Jim Brown, Bo Jackson... I'm sure there are others that don't immediately come to mind.

I've heard that the new slogan in college basketball is "Get old and stay old".

UCONN's top six included three portal transfers, and two fifth year players.
Purdue's starters included three seniors, including a 5th year portal transfer
NC State's top seven included four seniors, three juniors, and all seven of those players came to NC State through the portal
Bama's top six included five seniors, five of whom came to Alabama through the portal.

With winning immediately as the only priority, there is almost no time to develop freshman, even if they are big-time recruits. In the final 4 (semis and finals), Stephon Castle was the only freshman to score a point, except for this play:

A player under 6-11 hasn’t won MVP since 2018.

said with the same confidence as people saying that the United States would win every World Cup if only we put our best athletes on the football pitch
Not if other countries did so as well. Wemby in goal would be nasty.

KY, Duke, UNC and Kansas always have crappy opening odds, because their fanbase will blindly bet on them each year regardless of the odds or the team's prospects.

Congratulations to UConn for securing their second straight NCAA title. They are the eighth university to win back to back NCAA basketball championships. This is the sixth championship UConn has secured since winning their first in 1999. They have become the dominant college basketball program of the 21st century. A true blueblood.

UConn is bad for college basketball.

2023 UConn v SDSU 14.7 million viewers
2024 UConn v Purdue 14.8 million viewers

2024 USC v Iowa 18.7 million viewers

People don't like UConn and watching them succeed isn't enjoyable. Also, nobody gives a fuck about SDSU or Purdue.

USC-Iowa outdrew Kansas-UNC in 2022 (18.1M) as well.

Being on broadcast TV (Women's Final on ABC this year and the past couple of years) vs. cable TV (Men's final this year, and the 2022 UNC/Kansas final, since CBS and TBS alternate years of the final) accounts for some of that difference, but it certainly does not help matters that the men's final starts after 9:20pm eastern time. Seems like an 8:30pm start would make a lot more sense since it isn't moving off Monday night anytime soon.
