Official 2023-24 NBA Season Thread - Nuggets/T-Wolves Game 1; Cavs/Magic Game 7; Lakers fire Ham

same idea -- giving up maximizing competitiveness in the short-term (keeping paul george) to maximize assets for the future
Except that wasn't the Sixers' goal. The Sixers' management's goal had nothing to do with #assets other than in the hashtag world. Their goal was to con the fans, that's all it ever was. They sucked ass at drafting and running a team, and they knew it. So they bought themselves years of $$, zero pressure, continued support, and delusional happy fans by openly kicking the can down the road under the con that it was some grand winning strategy. Not surprisingly Sixers fans, who are on average complete fucking morons, fell for it.

Look back at that those draft picks. They were absolutely horrible, both at the time and in hindsight. They had no idea what they were doing, all they cared about was snowballing the excuses. Draft injured guys super high, then sit them for a year (three times?). Draft a ROY, trade him away. That was not all coincidence. Wild picks and busts. It was never about building a winning team or being competitive, it was only ever about creating an acceptable backdrop to ignore complete failure. Pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today. Hell, Embiid is the only one they got wrong (right), because he was supposed to be oft-inured and a career excuse, but he actually became really good when finally on the court. Once he started dragging them to some success, the pressure reappeared and a change was made. But the con was great while it lasted.

I've been waiting for this all day. If the Knicks ever win another championship the city will burn to the ground.

On this Six Trophies podcast, Knicks fan Jason Concepcion said something like, "Every win from now on is accompanied by the Knicks version of Jan 6."

The Lakers fired Ham.

my memory is that Ham was pretty coveted coming from the Bucks

will be curious to see where he lands from here

coaching a lebron team is not easy, but Lue and Spo did it and have shown they can do well enough without him too

I don't see LBJ leaving LA. But do you think he could go to the Clips? But the trouble there is Kawhi's health issues are worse than AD's.

JJ Redick had a podcast with Lebron where they have high level discussions about hoops.
JJ Redick is a finalist for the Hornets head coach job.
Lebron got Darvin Ham fired.

You could kill your coaching career

Garland and Mitchell are dominating inside the arc despite all the Magic size. Inexcusable given how little the Cavs are getting from deep or from Mobley.

I don’t mind post-Duke JJ, but I don’t see how you give him the reins to coach an NBA franchise with zero coaching experience. Then again, I thought Jalen Brunson was a nothing burger so what do I know.

Darius garland Broderick hicks’ed that

we have Marcus Morris and Cole Anthony getting crunch time minutes in an 4-5 elimination game — Eastern Conference down bad

when a player is clearly gassed like Mitchell rn I can’t understand why his man isn’t involved in the action on the offensive end. Make him guard

like what does no flex zone even mean? What do they know better? What does any of this have to do with Jenga? And how does this all involve chicken wings?

No Flex Zone was big with the kids several years ago. I remember my coworker couldn't stop singing it cause his middle school kids had it playing all night at a sleepover. Ads have passed us by.

Clippers done again

alright, just watched the video. Is this the Urban Rebecca black's Friday?

Just got back from Cavs-Magic. The only people on the court I'm 100% confident will be in the league in 5 years were Paulo, Franz, Mitchell, Garland, and I guess Mobley and Strus. The rest of the lineups were super meh.

Paolo and Franz are such a good forward combination at 21 and 22 years old. But they can't just keep drafting guards hoping to hit on one. Anthony is ok. Suggs is fine I guess. Black barely plays. They should be in the market for a PG more than any other team in the league. Fix that and get a rim protector/rim runner and they'll be right there with the Knicks behind the Celtics in a few years.

Mobley was so bad. I haven't seen him play that much, but I generally thought he was pretty good. I could not believe how bad he was offensively today.
