Official 2023-24 NBA Season Thread - Celtics advance, T-Wolves survive for now

Another late OKC comeback?

This is MVP Luka. When he plays ball and isn’t a whiny bitch

Man that one felt good. Series should be over, glad they have 2 days off so Luka can heal and try to finish them off on Saturday.

Is there a more valuable league minimum player than Derrick Jones Jr? Never thought he would be getting this type of run on a good team.

Yeah I hope they resign DJJ asap

It’s good to see Jones Jr find a home. He’s such an exciting player.

The top-line numbers will tell you quickly that it was one of the great masterpieces in recent playoff annals; he finished with 42 points, 13 assists and nary a turnover and did it while shooting 15 of 22 from the field and 8 of 9 from the line. Doing this against the league’s No. 1 defense, while matched up against four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert, made it even more impressive, not to mention Jokić doing it in one of the highest-stakes games of the season. And yet, all those platitudes still fall short. They underrate what he did, especially in that third quarter. It was quite possibly the best quarter of the best game of the best player of this decade.

Best player? Yes, I think we can safely say that. Jokić has won three of the past four MVP awards and finished second the other year. At this point, it would be a huge upset if he didn’t go down as the Player of the Decade for the 2020s (although there’s a 7-foot-4 French chap who might have a word to say about this).

Best game? Yes, there is a strong argument for this. Even by Jokić’s exalted standards, Tuesday was an absurdly good performance. His Game Score of 43.3 was the highest of any of his 78 career playoff games. And this isn’t just any player’s 78 games, but 78 games from the guy with the highest career playoff PER of all time. That Game Score was also Jokić’s second-highest of his season — only a January scrimmage against the lowly Washington Wizards topped it — and the seventh highest of his nine-year career.

Best quarter? I mean, you want to try to find a quarter in which he’s been better? Jokić had 16 points and four assists in the third period and only took seven shots. According to Basketball-Reference, nobody had ever had so many points and assists with so few shots in a playoff quarter before.

The biggest slice of unrelenting awesomeness was an eight-minute stretch near the end of the quarter. You’ll recall the Nuggets went into halftime with a six-point lead, but it was quickly vaporized by an early Minnesota run. When Michael Malone called timeout at 9:47, Minnesota led 55-53. By the time the quarter ended, the Nuggets would be ahead by 14 points, and the game would effectively be over.

Overall, Jokić scored or set up 27 of Denver’s 29 points in an eight-minute span starting at the 8:30 mark, without either missing a shot or committing a turnover. The Nuggets scored on 11 possessions in a row and 15 of 17; they only made one 3-pointer in that stretch, instead relying on a hailstorm of Jokić paint buckets and assists to overwhelm the mighty Timberwolves’ defense two points at a time.

somebody on that staff has to have a talk with him

because it's just absurd how his whining takes him out of the game

he even seems to get more tired when he's whining all game

when he's focused, dialed in, etc. - he's virtually unstoppable

kidd needs to give him one of those NCIS-style head slaps every few quarters

There has been some reports that coaching staff say him down before Game 5 and said the whining has to stop because it was hurting team

Whoever have that speech needs to give it every game

And I agree, the whining leads to his effort, his physicality, his defense, and his offense. It’s all connected

Jokic is amazing. I can get Shaq's frustration. Because as good as Jokic is, he couldn't guard Shaq. Like hardly at all. But Jokic is clearly the better total basketball player.

I got a kick out of this AI parody of Jokic.

well they are totally different players. shaq was a man among boys, a powerhouse with accessory skills. Jokic is a marvel of finesse but will still bang in the paint...not sure there is a good comparison for him for a player of the past.

Combination of Hakeem and Duncan with more size? It's tough to compare him to a past big. Jokic is like a taller, bigger, and much less athletic Lebron or Magic but with Hakeem's footwork.

I was thinking Hakeem and Robinson, but they only got 3apg and Jokic is at 9+. Jokic also doesn't block much, so there is a defense issue.
