Spurs Thread - Victor Wembanyama ROY, runner-up DPOY; Spurs pick #4 and #8

Good question. He seems explosive on the occasional dunk but doesn’t seem like an above average athlete doing anything else. I don’t remember many wow plays from him. I think he still has potential though.

Im not really excited about most available pgs right now. Glad the spurs appear to have little (if any interest) in young.

I'd be ok with cp3 short term for the right price. Could be the vet presence they currently lack. I'd draft best available pg and wing regardless.

The Spurs will play the Pacers twice in Paris on January 23 and 25. Weird that the Pacers won't play in SA and the Spurs won't play in Indy this season. Also strange that the trip is a week or so before the Rodeo Road Trip.

Why would they do that right before RRT? Maybe they will hit the NE teams on their way back to TX

No idea. The Rodeo is Feb 6-25 next year. So they'd have a 1.5 weeks before the RRT starts. I assume they'll be at home.

Derrick White is much better for the Celtics than I thought he'd be.

What’d they get for him? A 2nd?
2022 first-round pick --> Blake Wesley
Josh Richardson --> Devonte' Graham + four 2nd round picks (2024, 2026, 2028, 2029)
  • The 2024 pick was included in the Grant Williams trade (Celtics-Mavs) for Reggie Bullock and a 2030 1st round pick swap wtih the Mavs
Romeo Langford --> cut (now on the Utah G-League team)
2028 first-round pick swap with Celtics (#1 pick protected)
Plus they cleared out his 4/70 extension

Given that the goal was to stock up on assets, they did alright. But given how good White has looked with the Celtics, this trade would look horrible if they hadn't gotten Wemby from the tank. The franchise wouldn't be any better with Derrick White in the 3rd year of his extension and like a Thompson twin or Bilal Coulibaly from the 2023 draft.

Looking forward, the pick swaps could be key in providing max Wemby some cheap help. I doubt the Spurs will be better than the Celtics in 2028, but the Mavs could fall apart by 2030. The other 2nd round picks can get a useful role player.

ROY Victor Wembanyama. Second unanimous ROY in Spurs history after David Robinson. (Some dumbass voted for Keith Van Horn over Duncan)

DPOY announcement tomorrow.

The Spurs got the #4 and #8 picks. Very good chance of picking two PGs or a PG and wing. Seems like a lot of smoke about the Spurs taking Rob Dillingham as the PG of the future. After that, I could see them taking Topic, Buzelis, or Holland.

I hope they don’t overthink it. Dillingham is nice.

Do y’all go for a 3/4 with the #8 pick or BPA?

(Or maybe trade up to #3 to guarantee Dillingham?)

Strick, I haven't looked at much tape on any of these guys. My head says I don't want a small PG at #4. But my head also says Kentucky guards are about the surest a sure thing can get. From what little I know, Dillingham seems like he could be a Maxey.

I also think 3/4 is a bigger need than PG. I'd like to see them trade up for Risarche (if necessary) and take whichever PG drops to #8 (likely Topic, Castle, or Sheppard).

Hollinger says this is close to best case scenario for Spurs.
Oh yeah. The only better scenarios were getting #1, #2, or #3 and getting #7. It was very possible the Spurs could have ended up with only the #7 or #8 pick. They have the option to get two players who can contribute right away. But I'm worried they'll blow it. They've drafted very poorly recently.

Honestly, the worst thing to happen to the Spurs in this draft was the Hawks getting the #1 pick. That devalues the 2025 and 2027 Hawks picks and the 2026 pick swap. Of course, the Hawks should have been better for years now.

i guess some of it depends on how tall these guys actually are - i haven't seen any measurements yet

but 6'2 and 6'3 aren't exactly small point guards. who knows...

Buzelis could be a fun pickup if he's still around at 8. I kinda think we'll hear about him getting Top-4 buzz now, though. It was a great draw for him.

Interesting Vecenie mock. Vecenie has the Wizards taking Topic and the Rockets taking Clingan. I know Sengun isn't a true 7-footer, but I wouldn't take a 7-footer this high to play with or behind him. But we should root for one of the top three to take Clingan. He's the only lottery player the Spurs absolutely shouldn't pick. That leaves Risarche for the Spurs at #4 which I like. Then he has the Blazers taking Knecht which leaves the Spurs a chance between Dillingham, Sheppard, or a second wing in Holland. He has them taking Sheppard even though there seems to be a lot suggesting Dillingham is the guy. I wouldn't mind taking Holland either.

He has Bobi and Sallis at #26 and #27. I've seen both mocked to the Spurs at #35.

The Spurs have the #35 and #48 picks. With a stack of first-rounders likely in the 2025 draft, I think the Spurs will trade at least one of those for a future 2nd. I hope they include the other in a trade for a veteran.

Cool Wemby stat.
