Wake Golf 2024 - Women’s ACC Tournament April 18-21; Men's ACCT April 19-22

In all fairness, Haas's teams have been awesome in the fall and early spring. They just start shiting the bed once the ACC and NCAA tournaments come around

In a lot of ways that makes it worse. It shows we have the ability but never seal the deal. And it's been with a bunch of different players. So it can't be that one group is just bad under pressure. It's got to be something about the coaching style or philosophy.

Looks like Wake had more doubles or more than birdies today. 15 shots worse than Louisville (today). If they could have just shot the same as 27th ranked UL, 23rd ranked Arkansas, or 22nd ranked Texas Tech, they would have easily made the top 8.

Agreed. The players are highly recruited, initially perform well, and then get worse as the season goes on. Also, many of the men after leaving Wake have good pro careers. I think that’s a pretty strong indicator that the coaching is poor.

Looks like we tied for the 3rd worst round of all the 30 teams that qualified for the tournament. Good stuff guys!!

Other than recruiting, what exactly does a golf coach do?

Looks like the athletic department is anti-haas!

Once again the men underachieve and choke when the pressure is on. It's a pattern that has been evident over the years with Haas as coach. Like baseball, men's golf needs to move on to new leadership.

But the other schools managed hydration ok?

I’d say at least half of the teams that advanced are from states where they would be experiencing significantly warmer temperatures in the build up to this. The #1 seed is ASU. OU, OSU, and FSU all advanced.

My brother was struggling last week playing golf in Georgia while visiting from Maryland.

Who would be better? With a few exceptions, the Haas family of golfers have had a hard time finishing tournaments. Jay won big on the Senior tour, but won only 9 times on the PGA tour after making more cuts than anyone in history. He led a few majors before crumbling down the stretch. Bill won the big prize in 2012 with an incredible shot, but hasn’t been a strong finisher for the most part. Maybe we need a Wadkins as coach.

The two remaining ACC teams, FSU and UNC, lost in the quarters this morning.

Semis are: AZ State v. OK and Pepperdine v. OK State. All 4 are West of the Mississippi. 2019 WF Golfer (and ACC freshman of the year) Eugenio Chacarra won his match for OK State. Chacarra's sister is a top WF recruit for next season.

Chacarra left WFU because of grades? Covid? Heard he went home to Spain during spring semester last year and never returned.

Anyone know why Chacarra transferred?

Haas should have been asked to resign years ago. Again, this is like a basketball blue blood missing the tournament half the time, and then failing to get to the sweet 16/elite 8 when they have great teams. Fortunately, our program is still very highly regarded for the next coach. It’s well past time.

last 10 seasons (2011-2019 + 2021):

4 times in the top 4 of the ACC (0 titles)
3 appearances at Nationals, one top 8 finish (3rd in stroke play in 2019, lost in quarters)

previous 10 years:

6 times in the top 4 of the ACC (0 titles)
7 appearances at Nationals, 2 top 8 finishes (t4th in 2003, t3rd in 2006)

0 ACC titles and 3 national finishes in the top 8 over the last 20 seasons

FWIW, WF did get the Elite 8 in 2019, the last time that there was a season, and WF did get the Sweet 16 this year. I have no idea the role of a golf coach on the college level other than to bring in highly rated recruits, which Haas does. Golf is such an individual sport, and all or most of the players have their own coaches/pro's/parents that help them with their games. It's not like the typical team sport where there is a particular gameplan versus an opponent. Did Haas do a great job coaching the team in round 3 when Parker Gillam shot the low round at 64? Did Haas employ a different strategy when the same player shot 77 on the last day? I understand that over time the results (particularly the lack of an ACC title are gauling), but if you have ever played golf, it's really weak sauce to blame the coach for individual players shooting their worst round by 16 shots on the last day. That's just the nature of the sport.

As for the tradition of WF, yes WF has an amazing golf tradition, and that helps with recruiting, but WF built that tradition at at time when only a handful of schools even attempted to compete in golf, and when there were no limits on scholarships. The landscape of the golf has changed. Schools like Clemson, GT, FSU, Bama, Auburn, OK State, Texas Stanford, now are all in on golf. Golf was at best a niche college sport in the 1970s and 1980s when WF dominated. Also, don't discount the fact that WF doesn't have its own golf course. In the 1980s and 1990s, Arnold Palmer led an effort to build an elite WF golf course, and the school couldn't raise the funding. WF has amazing practice facilities and plays at awesome course all of over the country, but it doesn't help that there is no WF golf course.

Wake Forest has unlimited access to Old Town Club which is a top 100 US rated golf course. It’s also literally on campus. Combine that with the on campus Arnold Palmer Golf facility there’s a strong case to be made that we should be doing much better. No ACC title in over 30 years...makes no sense
