WFU Hoops: '22-'23 Roster Construction Thread: +Ituka/Carr/Appleby/Bradford

lol

OK, so what bigs are still in the portal that we fans would like to add to the roster?

I tend to think Williamson has some more to prove in college. I think he can improve his stock significantly if he has a strong year as a leader. Which I think he can do.

Improve his stock in what sense?

I think he was greatly overshadowed by Alondes and Jake, and Alondes took over a lot of the ballhandling. Daivien probably needs to show he can be the feature PG. He didn’t end the season particularly well. Was terrible in Texas A&M game. He had a couple big games, but pretty sporadic. I think he needs to show a lot more consistency. I think he can do it, but I don’t think he’s shown enough yet. I’d like to think he could have more of a breakout year.

I've said it before, but I think that while Alondes clearly set up guys to get shots, he made it exponentially more difficult for other guys to create their own shot due to defenses sagging off and doing everything they could to keep him out of the lane. Davien suffered the most from this since he can get in the lane, but once he did, there were 3 guys there to meet him every time. To that end, I would have liked to see Davien peel off more screens, or sneak into open spots in the zone to get his shot more often In short: I was more concerned about what he was doing without the ball (didn't seem like much) than he was with it. For the majority of the season, our team torched man-to-man defenses, with the BC game being the obvious outlier.

Time will tell if our offense will be better without Alondes, but it will certainly be different, as will the defenses we see.

Daivien was "the man" in his first year at Wake (leading scorer, most shots, most minutes). I realize that was the COVID year, and we sucked, but I think he was better this most recent season in a more supporting role.

It cut his assists/game in half, but it also cut his TOs/game in half.

Became more of a 3pt specialist, which is a better role for him in the ACC. Played about 4 fewer minutes/game and took fewer shots (8.4 vs 9.7), but his scoring didn't really suffer (11.8 vs 12.9). His shooting % was up across the board, as well.

Yeah. He’s not a PG and doesn’t have to be. Ideally he’s a bench scorer who can get you quick buckets from deep and driving the lane. He can help keep a lead in a small ball lineup at the end of games.

yea i think daivien's "senior" season will look a lot like his senior season

i just looked at his splits and a few things stand out:

he's great in our wins (47% 3FG) and bad in our losses (24% 3FG). his percentages also kind of hide that he had some ugly slumps (particularly in Dec and Feb)

another thing is that he shot under 10% from 3 in our four games on neutral courts. good lord.

on the other hand, he was often great in ACC play

a more consistent daivien would be a really nice development for this team

More consistent or a team that doesn't rely on him as much.

I don't think we are going to raise our non-Daivien talent level from last year, meaning if he returns, I think we will rely on him at least as much.

Daivien has been a better assist man over his previous three years than he was this past season, so he could raise the assist level. However, the staff's focus on Jao and Appleby very clearly indicates that DW's role on the team will not be that of playmaker.
