National Signing Day Thread 2/6

NO...Grobe has a solid history of wasting promising players. Recruit them and let them stand on the sideline for four years....

LOL. Grobe has recruited some good players for sure during his tenure, but to say that he wastes all of this great football talent couldn't be farther from the truth. If you want a good example of that, go look up Butch Davis, Mack Brown, or Lane Kiffin. In fact, I'd say Grobe and his staff have traditionally (i.e. not the last few years) gotten more out of their limited talent than any other staff in the country. Considering Wake has never been in the top 50 recruiting classes in the country, to state that Grobe wastes a lot of talent doesn't click.

I, for one, am excited about this class. I think we got some solid players along the line, a few good skill players, some really athletic LB/DE types, and some big defensive backs. Grobe and his staff need to do a better job cultivating that talent, for sure, but he's done it before and I am optimistic about the future of our program.

Grobe isn't going to get fired and bought out of his contract. He turned down the Nebraska job because he couldn't bring his assistants along. I agree that the next coach will be a young guy who doesn't know the limitations of this program. Small stadium, small fan base, small alumni, a city and campus that is as "happening" as a cup of decaf. Franklin sells a school with tons of cash, a great party town, and back-to-back bowl games. If a Big Ten teams comes down to Nashville and scoops him up, they still have the cash, the SEC and a great downtown.

Vandy is in the same city and conference it's sucked in for the last 60 years. don't let your hopelessness for this program let you discount the impact a great coach can make. Boise freaking State doesn't have shit going for it but blue turf and California juco players.

Boise St was being bankrolled by the founders of Micron Technology. Franklin took a helicopter to see a prospects game. He buzzed the field and landed next to the bleachers. I can't see Grobe pulling a stunt like that. It's like comparing James Dean to Ward Cleaver. Who would you get to replace Grobe? Were would we get the money to payoff his contract and hire the new guy? If we can't discuss a reasonable solution, (fire/keep Grobe and /or Wellman)then this line of posts will countinue til September.

For points 1-10, it's well trod that James Franklin has 10 times the personality of Jim Grobe, but i'm perfectly sure that Grobe could easily afford to land a helicopter by some random football field. It's also not my job to find a suitable replacement for Grobe, that's supposedly why we pay our esteemed AD so much money. Our Football program already loses money every year, it should be rather easy to use some of our ACC money to pay a new coach to hopefully create excitement around the program and try and get in the black for once. This is a pointless conversation anyway, a large percentage of our older fanbase (possibly including yourself) are too stuck in the failures of the past to risk making a change now. As long as Grobe can win 5 or 6 games a year, you all will never let him go.

I think by the time this incoming class is in its fourth year of eligibility, assuming most are redshirted, Grobe will be gone. He won't be the one coaching them in the prime of their college careers. He won't be fired...he'll just retire. Just a prediction, based on personal opinion. Grobe is not getting any younger and is definitely less intense than he was 6-7 years ago. And he will have plenty of money in the bank.

Good post.

Grobe sure wasted the no star talent Skinner, 2 stars Chris Barclay, Steve Vallos, Tyson Clabo, Calvin Pace, Steve Justice, Blake Lingruen, Chip Vaughn, Kevin Patterson, Chris Givens, Josh Bush, Stanley Arnoux, Josh Gattis, Joe Looney, Jeremy Thompson, Patrick Ghee, Willie Idlette, Ryan Plackemier, Aaron Curry, Sam Swank, Tommy Bohannon, Chip Vaughn, etc.,

NFL grades this staff as one of top 5 in player development...all aspects...which made Joe Looney "the most impressive draft interview this year" according to Jim Harbaugh. It is the all around development that the players also appreciate which is why Alphonso Smith is such a big fan.

Yea, you know about as much about Boise State as you do Wake football...next to fuggin nothing.

Micron sponsors Boise athletics (read "Football")

Micron was founded by J.R. Simplot, the same guy who happened to sell Ray Kroc every single spud that has ever been fried at a McDonalds.

I worked for Mr. Simplot about 20 years ago at a mountain he owned in McCall, Idaho -- Brundage Mtn. Ski resort.

Lectro, you don't think the staff wasted Bohannon?

They didn't develop a system in which TBo could thrive but I will give most staffs a pass on not incorporating the FB into their game plan.

He was one of our best football players, yet it's ok that they wasted him just because he's a fullback???
Make use of your best players, even if it means finding them a new position where they can succeed. That's a coach's job.

What new position did you want him to play? TE, he would have touched the ball even less there.

There are tons of teams with really talented fullbacks that don't get utilized. If Grobe's most glaring misuse of talent was TBo, then he is doing quite well.

You use your best players. Period. By hook or by crook. I realize many coaches don't use a fullback anymore, but Grobe employed one of his best players there, so national trends are kind of irrelevant. Fullback is not some sort of pariah - theres no rule against using one just because other coaches don't. But if not, he should have put tbo in a position to help us more, either by bucking the trend and using the fullback more, or by making him some other position that would have been used more.

Now wait a second...ph knows all about those "Fullback- Big-Cat Offenses" out there.

Anyway...they developed 2 star Mugehlli and they have given TBohanon what he needs -- including a lot of nice catches showing versatility. He did not play behind a solid line during his tenure -- true, that is an area of great concern for Grobe and one he is attempting to address by bringing in Himebauch. So, Tommy was very much needed to block and protect...both of which he does at a very high level and are certainly the attributes most coveted by NFL scouts considering the FB position.

Richmond paper indicates Tetlow's switch was due to UVA's engineering program.

Someone on our staff should just keep a running tally of the kids who tell us that and how many end up enrolling in the engineering program to have the numbers handy on the spot.

Steve, Grobe pulled Bohannon's redshirt in Rinfrette's senior year. He thought we needed 2 FBs.

Plenty of pro style offenses use FBs. It's not like he wasn't on the field. He rarely got carries. Same problem Ovie's junior year. Then Ovie was a TD machine.

Does your stupid ass believe that our football team can't compete because of a lack of funds? That's the excuse your making? After some dumbass before you has stated that we'll never compete with Vandy, because they have money. Last time I checked, Boise State is still in bumfuck Idaho, in a nobody conference, and they still don't recruit for shit. Boise State's last 5 recruiting classes have been ranked in the 40's,50's, or 60's!, they recruit worse then we do! You still want to spout some bullshit to me about fucking Micron Technology, you know nothing poser? How about you just shut the fuck up and stop apologizing for and excusing a man that makes 2.5 mill a year for doing jack shit.

This class was the first class that we have had rated better than 69th in a while so if they are pulling in those classes they are recruiting better than us and playing against easier competition. Regardless of how you feel about Grobe we will NOT do much better even if YOU think we can. The man has amassed six 6+ win seasons in 12 years. We it took us 35 years to prior to him to equal that. I don't think it is going to funny if we push the man out and go back to what we were. I would rather be a 5 win team than a 1-3 win a year team.
