Obama's air strike plans in disarray after Britain rejects use of force in Syria

meanwhile, WSJ is reporting that Assad has now moved all his stuff around, including into hardened bunkers, so they're going to have to fly USAF bombers (from Kansas, probably) in combination with the Tomahawks, and we'll have to use a lot more Tomahawks.

Each Tomahawk costs about $1.2 million. Don't know how much it costs to fly a bomber round trip from Kansas, with accompanying refueling, but it's probably somewhere between a shitload and $Texas.

This is what happens when you draw "red lines" without thinking or getting any international support for your drawings, and then are totally unprepared to take action when they are crossed.

Close. Missouri.

The problem that we face now is that if Obama backs down to Putin (which it looks like is the right move) then we lose serious face internationally. I don't see a good way out for Obama unless Putin extends him a lifeline and basically gives Putin an IOU to be collected upon later. Either way we are going to lose face. Lose it by defying the internationally community and bombing a sovereign state in the face of mass opposition, or lose it by caving in to Russia. Either way we lose. Drawing a red line when he had no intentions of acting was a rookie move.

My guess is that our way out is that we become convinced that Russia's intelligence causes doubt which will allow us to sneak out the back door. Unfortunately our president and secretary of state have gone multiple times before the world with the message that there is CLEAR evidence that Syria gassed its own people. I am not sure how they wiggle out of that (but I thought the same thing about Benghazi...I guess other people are finally starting to see the admin's inconsistencies). It is a complete mess.

Hardened former KGB agent vs. Community Organizer; not a good match-up.

I hope the sharks ignor the blood in the water. Otherwise, the community organizer could get pressed into a really bad decision.

Like the article also indicates, sending cruise missiles into Iraq because Sadaam was not cooperating with the UN inspectors did not change Sadaam's behavior, just as a strike with cruise missiles and bombs will not change Assad's.

Politicians don't change course because bad things happen to their constituents. We saw that with the sequester and we're in a democracy. The idea that cruise missiles that don't specifically hit the leader of a regime will cause a change of course is ridiculous.

Better than the fake flyboy you supported whose lies led to the deaths of over 4000 and the maiming of over 30,000 American heroes.

You do realize that W hasn't been president for 5 1/2 years, correct? Stop being such a jock sniffing flag waver.

In fact, just go die in a hole you fucking shill.

Three years ago it was unthinkable that there would be global opposition to Obama responding to a chemical weapon attack that killed or injured thousands of innocent people. It seems that much of the world has come to realize the US was duped into an empty suit for the most powerful office in the world. Say what you want about Bush, but there is no doubt that he was more successful in building a global coalition after the atrocity of 9/11. Obama simply lacks the leadership skills needed for the office he holds. No surprise that RJ is among the last to figure this out.

this gas attack is not 9/11

All the people who were clamouring to rush into a completely unnecessary 170,000-troop invasion and 10-year occupation war in Iraq....and who voted to give the man who pushed us into it a 2nd four year term in office....have now magically become isolationists. Nice.

Maybe because we've learned from the mistakes of the past while you are barreling headlong to repeat them?

Would you rather that they be hot-to-trot to bomb Damascus and get into another fine mess?

By the way, don't you think that the case of Sadaam Hussein was different than the case of Bashar Assad, especially in terms of the danger that they posed to their neighbors and the world's oil supply?

Comparing 9/11 to what happened in Syria is insane. It's stupefying anyone would ever compare the two.

Since you never have any interest in being anything other than an asshole..CYA.

Go die in a hole?

And the Bush Presidency is ongoing. He might not be in office now, but many of the problems we are still having to deal with are a result of things that happened when he was in office. They didn't just flip a switch and turn off the Bush Presidency the day he left office.

Why settle for "many", when "all" is still on the table? I mean, if you're going to go, go big.

Well, they're both Bush's fault, so it's hard not to see the obvious connection...

Can the OP change the thread title? "ITT: BKF and RJ Blame Bush for Something" should work.
