Gimme you top five most likely

Agreed, though I don't think Shaka or Marshall would cost $3.5 million or that the other guys would cost $2 million. We're going to hire one of those other guys precisely because we can get them for less than $2 million, if not substantially less. (As an example, I believe Mike White makes approximately $500,000 per year. That's a guy we could hire for less than $1.5 million.)

Shaka currently makes $1.5 million and he turned down offers from UCLA/NC State to take 1.5 million. I highly doubt he's moving for less than $3 million, especially with the state of things currently at WFU.

Why do people think that (a) Howland would be interested in Wake, and (b) that Wellman would be interested in Howland? Any informed speculation out there other than he doesn't currently have a job and we will hopefully be in need of a coach? Other than his brief stop at Pitt, he's a west coast guy, and it does not seem that Wellman would be interested in Howland after what happened at UCLA: ESPN Article

rumors floating around about a week ago indicated that the AD wanted to make a quick hire and have someone in place shortly after the ACCT/firing of Bzzz. That would eliminate a lot of candidates. Also, the money. And the rumor that Howland was approached or we formally inquired about salary requirements.

Thanks. I just don't think Wellman would overlook the issues at UCLA.

I would never defend Wellman, but after what he has done to the program, do we have an inflated view of the attractiveness of the position (understanding that if we hired a potted plant it would be an upgrade)?

Howland would be the best hire Wellman could make, assuming Marshall and Smart won't come here (and they won't).

The "issues" with Howland consist of one magazine article. No NCAA sanctions even suggested, much less proven. Howland is a winner. Wake Forest has never hired a coach with his credentials (multiple Sweet 16s, trips to Final Fours, conference championships). He would bring instant national credibility.

And he wins with defense. That means he can overperform with 3-star talent, which is what we are likely to have.

Agreed except the 3 star talent part. No reason a great coach can't recruit 4 and some 5 stars at Wake. We're not talking about football, and I'm hopeful Claw is going to change that too.

So because he previously turned down amounts equivalent to his currently salary means he'll only accept precisely double that, and nothing less? I mean obviously we'd have to give him a substantial raise over $1.5 million, but even I don't think it'd get as high as $3 million. According to this list, there are all of 7 coaches who make $3 million or more.

Regardless, I don't think we're getting Smart one way or the other.

No, it's multiple articles and multiple problem recruits including Shabazz Muhammed. Not to mentioned his best finish in KenPom in his last 4 years was 43rd. At fucking UCLA.

I think (hope?) he was referencing the team over Howland's first year or two at Wake Forest with the talent already here and in the immediate future.

Well said. The more I looked into the UCLA "issues" the more they seemed like non-issues. He can coach and has a track record that proves it. UCLA fans are begging him to come back- even Bill Walton! Some of these names that are being mentioned have little head coaching experience and one or two decent seasons. You really prefer that over a coach who has been to three Final Fours? Watch this interview with Howland:

I'd be comfortable with paying Shaka or Howland in the $2 million to $2.5 million range. I'm not sure I have any interest in talking to Marshall. The guy is a jackass.

1. Shaka
2. Ben Howland
3. Reed
4. White
5. Lonergan

Please get #1 or #2 done Ron, so that some people will want you to keep your job ... unless you are just ready to retire anyway.

I wondered about that. Not a big deal for me. I'm a little concerned about some of the neg press stuff, but admit I know next to nothing about it.

NCAA sanctions or not, I just don't think Wellman will consider anyone who has the sniff of any scandal on them. I would be shocked if Howland is on his list.

Howland's self-marketed price tag will probably make this discussion about him moot anyway.

Howland said he does not want to wait another year. He wants the best available job. That's us. Watch the interview. The dude sounds like there's plenty of gas left in the tank.

Where was the gas when he couldn't get UCLA, of all schools, into the sweet 16 for the last 5 years?

The guy may know basketball, but his ability to recruit and connect with players was tied directly to the staff he had. When the good assistants left, he floundered and could not replace them.

One of the worst things our AD office could do is to try to replicate the football hire. What our football program needed is not what the basketball program needs.

I like Howland. The baggage at UCLA is UCLA. It has been a dead end job for coaches since Wooden (karma). A few guys have had some success but nobody has been really comfortable there. Have to coach like Wooden but recruit like Calipari. Places like LA and Miami are tough places to run college programs.

Wellman is the guy who hired Randy Casstevens. Howland is Girl Scout compared to Casstevens.
