Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

Who is even left at that point? Russell Turner? Maybe then we go with my idea: Jeff Battle for 1-year interim head coach, Wellman has 6 months to retire, and new AD tries again next year.

The interim coach route really worked out for Arkansas football a couple of years ago.

There was a D'Antoni hader somewhere here, but I actually think he'd crush on the college level. Would be a super fun style of bball to watch. If Shelton can shoot, we'd have a PG ready to go.

JUST SAYING.

Since the Manning hiring is just meh, I would have to admit that D'Antoni would be a fun hire. His offense would be super entertaining and he could just put in a zone defense or hire a defensive assistant to manage the defense.

"Where He Stands: Just because Manning was contacted doesn’t mean he’s a top candidate for the job. We know Shaka Smart is the No. 1 target, and he’s yet to officially say no. Until Smart does that, Wake Forest won’t proceed with anyone else. With Ben Howland not getting the Marquette job, it’s safe to assume that he’s higher on the radar than Manning, too. It would be hard to imagine Xavier’s Chris Mack being a lower priority than Manning. Archie Miller at Dayton is another coach who Wake Forest will likely at least try to get in touch with. As it stands right now, it appears that the contact with Manning is more about laying some groundwork rather than entering serious negotiations."

This makes me a little more comfortable. Calm and Rational breakdown of why Manning would be an asinine hire in the the 48 hours.

We will get a good basketball coah

he is regurgitating conventional wisdom. he knows no more than anyone here.

Good. Glad the media writing matter of factly what others have been suggesting with a bit more emotion here got the message through.

Absent an extension, there's no need. They'll pretend Shaka never even spoke to Wake.

Like the dorky kid asking the hottest girl in school to the prom.

"Like, let's pretend this didn't happen."

"Uh sure. OK."

I mean that's all nice, but this is just a bunch of speculation along the lines of we already "know":
- That Smart hasn't "officially" said no, which of course is an example of this reporter (Chris Moore) conflating the words "officially" and "publicly."
- That it would be "safe to assume" Howland is higher on our radar than Manning, all things being equal (which at this point, they may not be).
- That it's "likely" Wake will "try to get in touch with" Miller, which of course, we may have already done.

That's essentially what everyone has been saying here, only we know Wellman can't be trusted.

Unless the laying of groundwork is necessary since we have struck out on all of our other options at this point.

That's just it, though. It hasn't been "widely reported" that Wake ever formally offered Shaka or that the parties were in any actual discussions; only the ACCSports.com article and the Goodman report from a week ago Sunday (or whenever) stating that he was a "target." There were reports and tweets from sports bloggers, reporters, and even the local Milwaukee FOX station regarding Marquette's negotiations with (and possible hiring of) Smart, including reports of a scheduled press conference complete with date and time.

There hasn't been anywhere close to that kind of public "information" concerning Wake's pursuit of him. The most we've gotten is a few posts from anonymous message board accounts whose names are written in green stating that we offered him "Tuesday night or Wednesday morning." That's really nothing like the MU fiasco.

If we're quibling over how public the pursuit of Shaka has been I think we're arguing over nothing. Wellman made it blatantly clear to this fanbase Shaka was number one. Whatever the national media further reported on is their prerogative. He should even if he doesn't need to say whether wake has been denied and then if it has happened move on like every other school that has chased Smart. it would not be embarrassing or hurt some other coaches feelings. Happens all the time in searches for new coaches.

The only thing I don't get is the radio silence from VCU. Haven't they (or Shaka himself) always put forth some kind of hard statement about his future with the school by now? Before now?

Perhaps they aren't going to this time because no extension or raise is necessary / possible at this time? Didn't someone say with pretty good certainty that VCU has already maxed out their Shaka budget especially with their plans to renovate their arena?

When did he do that?

dantoni sucks
I actually don't mind D'Antoni. Sure, he can't adapt and only has one offensive style, but at least he could recruit the guys who fit his system. And it's not like we rebound anyway.

EDIT: In no way do I think we'd ever go after him, or that he'd even consider it. But if we're talking out of our ass, it's not like he's worse than [Redacted].
