ESPN: Danny Manning considered for WFU job, meets with Wellman 3/31/14

Buzz's resume wasn't thin. It was thick with mediocrity and failure. That's what made it horrible such a horrible hire (and what made Gregory such an awful hire at GT).

Kansas hired Roy Williams and he had no head coaching resume. Sometimes that means nothing - you want to get guys with huge upside, and get them as close to starting as possible (so you get the vast majority of their careers). What you want to avoid is hiring the guys who have proven they have no upside.

I don't disagree on the big potential upside on Manning. But, after 4 years in the wilderness, can you take the chance?

I'm beginning to think we don't have much of a choice but to (especially if we can't land Shaka or Archie and howland is someone we don't want to pursue)

I'll tell you why Manning is not the right coach ... for the same reason as why I hated him as a player. He has not made a commitment to any team since he left college. He was traded to the Hawks in '94 for Dominique and left at the end of the season for more money. He's already looking to leave Tulsa after two years. (And if he doesn't leave, he's using us to get more money out of them.)

This is a guy that's looking out for number one. This is not a guy looking to build a program back up.

Heh. I'm a GT fan, at this point it's something close to a decade in the wilderness and I've thought the same thing about our program.

I think, objectively, you have to just wash the previous years away and make the best hire you can for the long term. If that's a more inexperienced guy you are sold can be at your program for a long time and take it to the top level, you do it. "Panic hiring" a guy to win the immediate fan response is bad business, imo (see: Howland, Ben).

I can't blame the guy for trying to escape an Atlanta sports team...

I don't get Georgia Tech. They should be a sleeping giant, just waiting for the right investment.

I'm sure he's trying. Of course he is. But what about the narrative that has come from him over the last 4+ years convinces you that he can convince a coach that Wake Forest basketball can win now?

He's spent the last 4 years convincing people that Wake basketball was dirty under Dino and needed to be cleaned in order to justify losing. And those "dirty" years were when Wake basketball was actually good with the type of athletes any coach wants to recruit.

Wellman and the powers that be have been telling people that doing a "good job" at Wake is under .500 or barely .500. Why would a coach with championship aspirations think they can come to Wake and win?

Now if us diehards were in the room with Shaka, we'd be talking about all the stuff in the "What Shaka needs to know" thread that I started. We'd be talking about our NBA Deacs. We'd be talking about how Wake was only below UNC and Duke in recruiting for the 90s and 00s. We'd be talking about a fanbase ready to support any legit coach with a fire in his belly.
If Shaka is the guy you think he is, then he understands what and why Wellman was doing what he did the past 4 years and knows all about Wake's bball history. I'm sure he also appreciates an AD that supports his coaches even when under fire, which is a perspective you and a lot of others completely ignore in this entire saga (even though it underpins a lot of Wellman's actions). If Shaka doesn't get all that, then IMO he's not the guy we want. I seriously doubt he doesn't get it though.

If DM is looking out for number one, he should probably win a ton of games and get a big raise or get hired away for more than we'll pay him.

The way some folks are in here praising this potential hire makes me think it's a done deal already. Ugh. We are so fucked.

Whoever said we need to can Wellman to give off an aura of stability to coaching candidates is correct. Too late for that now.

Dino was his coach and Wellman fired him and threw him under a bus for four years.

Tulsa was predicted at the bottom of the CUSA Manning's 1st year after a complete roster turnover. They won the CUSA this year with one of the youngest teams in the US.

Quit rationalizing this hire before it happens and demand more of 'home run' until something is announced. If Manning is hired then carry on your support, but until then I'd hope to hell you want someone better, however unlikely that is.

Go ahead and hire Manning. It's obvious by now that we whiffed on the big names. With the current administration in charge we could still do a hell of a lot worse. I can live with Manning as coach. Wellman will be gone soon and the new AD can look elsewhere right away if it doesn't work out.

Best case he will get us to the dance twice and bounce somewhere else and we'll be left holding our Deacs.

Seems like the most likely option right now. Sad. If Tim Miles didn't look like such a dork I would be far more excited about him and his resume.

I called Danny Manning two weeks ago, and I can not believe that this board would not be happy with the hire. If Danny lands in Winston I promise that you are getting a very intelligent coach on and off the court, a player coach that can still get out there and play with his players, a former player who was National Player of the year and #1 in the draft, a recruiter that was the lead recruiter for most of the recent players for Kansas (Wiggins not included), a guy that has respect at all levels and especially the local H.S. coaching levels. You are talking about a player that every coach that ever came in contact with, including opposing coaches, spewed compliments about his play and character. He put a crappy Tulsa team back in the dance in less than two years of taking the job. Granted he has only been a head coach for a short period, but he has been in the right circles for over a decade.

Dawg (or anyone else who knows): how strong are Danny's ties to the NC area these days, does he have lots of family around here, etc.?

Still wavering on how I feel about Manning as a candidate, but I would be interested to see what he could do with Devin Thomas.

Yep, your posts are going to sway Wellman MAC. No doubt about it

Yes, Wellman fired a coach prematurely so he couldn't fire the next one prematurely (until excuses were exhausted). Throwing the prior one under the bus was spin to support the next hire....and it was obviously spin. The prior coach was never re-hired and there are unsavory rumors about why quick action was taken...but they remain rumors. That's what I think Shaka understands (or should) about the Wake AD-coach relationship the past 4 years.

I like Odom. I think he could be useful to us. I don't think he's the AD we need. Dave is too old school when it comes to technology.

Not about swaying Wellman you Fuck, just about not being LOWF and accepting less than a Howland, Mack, etc.
