Two soccer questions

I wonder if RJ knew this was the way this thread was going to go? Part of me believes he definitely did, but I don't think he ever though he would be banned especially during the NBA finals. I imagine last night he set up a nice tea party of stuffed animals berating each one of them for attacking him as he typed away on an imaginary keyboard.

A lot of his threads end up like this. In all e-seriousness, I don't understand the Rj-hate. You guys take him more seriously than he takes himself.

Hell, if I trashed soccer I wouldn't be banned. There's some parts about WC play that are just God awful. The flopping for one is just full on stupid.

This World Cup has been outstanding.

...up until this miserable Nigeria-Iran match, at least.

Oh good. Another once-a-4-years "fan".

He didn't get banned for trashing soccer, but you already knew that.

The sport will survive without you. Feel free to quit watching.

The world will survive without you.......feel free.....

He obviously takes himself pretty seriously to throw that comment out. I'm sure he didn't mean it literally, but who cares if he got banned 3 days...other than him?

So I'm driving through the Virginia countryside today, and my brother calls me from NYC. He's watching the Germany-Port game, which I have on XM. He says "I know you love soccer, and I like it, too, but it will never really take off here until the diving and acting shit stops. Did you see #13 for Germany? He deserves a fucking Oscar. THAT'S why it will never be popular here."

Ugh.

Note: my brother grew up playing the game, though he gave it up ~14 for the other football. He's a big hockey fan. Loves baseball, too.

I explained to him that while I, too, hate diving and acting, it's not the only American sport in which this happens. I asked him if he's watched Lebron or the entire Duke Blue Devils team flop. He said it's different. I said "how?" He had a problem in particular with the overreacting to a foul, made up or not.

I told him that, to begin, the problem isn't the game itself, but rather the masses who see soccer as a threat to an American culture that celebrates "world champions" in sports in which really no one but Americans compete. After explaining to him that I'm not going to abandon a sport with problems, as every sport has, of course, I moved on. BTW, his first example of a heroic, non-acting sport was hockey. I didn't want to argue, so I ignored it - but do find it funny that a sport that for years (and still does, to an extent) embraced fighting as part of its culture (though fighting has nothing to do with hockey skill) is seen as superior ethically, morally, and by every other metric in the eyes of many Americans like my highly educated, sport loving brother.

This whole thing has played out for years. RJ asks a question that he is sure he is the one with the correct answer.

The answer is given that differs from his.

He continues to ask his question with more and more obtuse analogies (insinuating that he is right and they are wrong).

People get frustrated that he won't accept the answers they gave and tell him to stop in varying degrees of snarkiness.

He goes overboard and starts saying, "its all about me!!!"

Hilarity and idiocy ensues.

Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

Haha, really?

There is seriously a ton of diving in hockey, and it’s rarely penalized. When it is, the opposing team almost always gets a corresponding penalty for whatever call the diver was attempting to sell, so there’s very little downside. If you soccer guys figure out how to cut it down, please pass that info along to the NHL. For now, whatever, it is what it is and hardly outweighs the good stuff.

i forgot to add that he then sends numerous emails/pms to the mods asking them to take action against his "enemies."

Wait, did RJ really get banned for that? Sure, he was being boneheaded in some of his other post, but what a bunch of nancies.

Wait, RJ got banned? Ive made far worse "threats" on like half of the sports administration at Wake.

He is my countryman, and I will not stand for this.

I don't agree with the banning either, but you've done just as me to protest the decision. Fuck all.

I also think the US should drop Clint Dempsey and play Aron Icelandic.

Well we've got almost a whole year to come up with some stupid horse racing changes.

Yea, let's make the Triple Crown go over an 8 week period so they get plenty of rest and Steve Coburn can get more sauce in his system.

LK's blind spot about RJ is so fucking sad.

I'm with BSD. RJ is RJ. He can be annoying, but the unbelievable overreactions he generates from (some) otherwise good and reasonable posters borders on the insane.

He makes a couple innocuous posts on this thread and people catch feelings like Brews during the NBA finals.

Was his post to DeacMan offensive? I guess. Was it ban-worthy? Not for anybody other than him or Milhouse.

Bunch of 7th grade girls on this board.
