Wake / Bucknell Game Thread

Devin Thomas and Darius Songaila should never be mentioned in the same sentence.
Darius was legit tough as balls, not this fake stare-down tough. And he showed up against everybody, not just the Samfords and Mt St Mary's.

Amen to that! Darius was honest-to-goodness talented and possessed a well-rounded set of skills.

And his foul reputation was certainly undeserved. He was simply ahead of his time for the ACC. ;) In fact, he probably belonged in the Big East where you used to get 6 fouls.

Seems a little over the top harsh on Devin. I'd rather have rein a guy in than have to try to get him to play with effort and passion. The former can be done, and youth is a curable disease. The latter just can't be taught. He'll be fine. This was another teaching moment, and I know Devin is very frustrated.
If Devin was a Deac circa 2011, then the culture club would have chased him out of town, too.

Some guy behind WakeBDer at the game yesterday said "this wouldn't have happened with [Redacted] here" about the Thomas ejection.

Uh it did happen AND [Redacted] recruited him. People are just stupid as a box of rocks sometimes.

He's a junior and the oldest player with the most experience on the team (of those that actually play or aren't named Leonard).

At this point, he is who he is. We knew who Buzz was early, and posters still kept claiming the fanbase was over the top harsh on him. Similar to Buzz (and RJ), he likes to puff up his chest, claim he's better than he is, blame the other guy for starting the fight, and play the victim when he gets hammered.

Devin's only 20 years old and has a new coach who knows what it is like to be a big man at this level and the next. He can be taught. You can't compare him to 50 and 60 somethings. I am certain he will mature some more, hopefully sooner rather than later.... He is not All-ACC caliber, but we need him, and need him to play and act better. And more consistently. I always thought Chas' antics were calculated to get into the opponents' heads, ala Richard Sherman. Devin just doesn't have control of his emotions yet and it is hurting himself and his teammates.

After 2+ years of playing on an ACC team, albeit with a non-ACC coach for the first two of those years, a player should know the lines he can and can't cross within the context of a game. Random or isolated transgressions can be certainly attributed to youth/immaturity/emotions, but when a pattern emerges, it's not that simple. And we haven't even started consistently playing real teams with real defenders yet.

If he is still demonstrating this utter lack of restraint and poor judgment this far into Manning's tenure, then I don't think we should expect DT to change much before he leaves Wake. I'm sure the coaches have talked to him, counseled him and now are using "tough love" by punishing him with loss of minutes when he lashes out.

Methinks if he would work harder to balance his game by expanding his skill-set, he wouldn't be as apt to throw tantrums when things don't go his way. There are some really nice aspects of his game, but he hasn't managed to expand upon his array of post moves, improve his range so he can face up, nor has he figured out how to recognize a collapsing defense consistently. He is a very good passer of the BB when he wants to be, but somehow that hasn't really translated when it comes to kicking it out quickly from the post when the double team comes or hitting cutters on the weak side. Perhaps we need to design more plays for him to exploit the other teams' tendency to double and flash more weak-side help, but only he can make a conscious choice to stop acting like a churlish, spoiled brat on the court.

Please tell me that WakeBDer got up in this person's grill.

It's about to be conference play of his junior year. A little late for the "he will grow out of it" attitude.

Devin's only 20 years old...

Only 20 years old? Man, no wonder the millennials are so fucked. Participation trophies, 8X parents who think their grown ass 20 year olds are still kids...they don't call them the Peter Pan generation for nothing. Devin is (should be) a grown ass man. Many "kids" his age have been to war, gotten married, had kids and started jobs. He's still having trouble not throwing a tantrum while playing a basketball game.

Saying a 20 year old is "a grown ass man" is one of the dumbest things I have ever read on these boards.

You're a millennial...it's not your fault. You do realize that being a kid into your mid-20's is not normal around the world, of even just 1 generation back in Western culture, right?

Just because you can go to war and start a family at age 20 doesn't make you a "grown ass man". You aren't done growing mentally or physically at age 20. It's a ridiculous statement.

Regardless we both think he needs to mature on the court. That's the bottom line.

Disagree, even as a millennial I have to agree that while at age 20 you are not at peak wisdom you are certainly a grown ass man who should be able to handle your business like an adult.

This millennial problem is worse than I thought if someone is contending a 20 year isn't a grown ass man.

We don't physically peak until late 20's, early 30's and our mental peak comes in late 30's, early 40's. That's not exactly a way to define adulthood. Seriously, you're having trouble seeing outside of your own generational bubble here.

I really appreciate how hard Devin plays. He's a warrior and completely vital to our team if we want to win more than a couple games the rest of the way. However, very disappointed in his lack of maturity with the jawing at BSD being the most egregious thing he did to me. He's acting like a dick to one of 2 Wake blogs in existence. If he feels the need to open his mouth to respond, it should be to clarify. This is why refs will hate him again this year and he'll be an easy target.
I'm holding out hope that Manning will know how to deal with dudes like Devin because of all his experience on the court and he seems like a very cool, level headed guy who players should respect. If he really did sub DT out after screaming after that layup that is masterful. I don't remember that though.
If we lost to Bucknell that would have been all on Devin and he's got to know that.

Add the 201X Deacs, children of the 8X Deacs, to the list of growing issues with the 8X Deacs.

It becomes a huge problem for Manning if DT loses his composure in a major way against Louisville or Duke. Then the media etc...will say Manning/Wake should have seen it coming and headed it off. We don't want a negative spotlight on us right now for several reasons. Our poor play is enough of a burden.
