Republicans for POTUS, 2016 Edition

What impact are Trump's comments going to have on the GOP as they try to mend relations with Hispanic voters?

Haven't really heard any condemnation from the other GOP candidates of his comments. If I were Bush or Rubio I'd get out in front of this (or would have I guess that ship has sort of sailed) and blast Trump for being an ignorant out-of-touch bigot. I guess we'll see if the GOP sees backlash for this at all.

I haven't seen any poster here say they're voting for her in the primary and I have seen most people say they'll hold their nose and vote for her in the general because the alternative will be worse.

Doesn't matter in CA because the primary comes so late, but with an open primary I'll vote for the 'Pub who would make the best President. Would be much more inclined to vote that way in the general election, but don't trust the current GOP with the House, Senate, and 3 Supreme Court nominees in the balance. If Dems held both chambers or I thought the next three GOP nominees would be more like Roberts than Scalia or Thomas, could see voting against HRC. Truly can't stand HRC, just distrust/dislike the current GOP more. Bigger issues with Boehner's incompetence than HRC's many character flaws.

People will vote for her in the primary because she is the democratic candidate that can win and the thoughts of having a Pub president trying to reign in the nutcases in the house and senate on the right scares the hell out of anybody who leans left.

I actually think Trump's histrionics open up the debate for the other candidates to look reasonable.

Wringing endorsements all around. Campaign motto "Vote Hillary she sucks less that the other guy".

You'll vote for whoever the Pubs nominate because you think they suck less than Hillary.

That's a nonsensical post and you know it.

Excellent word attempt, poor application. My post makes plenty of sense. You don't happen to agree with it, but it makes sense. Go back and look at the Democratic Nominee thread. Everyone says they hate Hillary, but the entire thread is dedicated to her inevitability. My personal opinion is that Democrats like to say they despise Hillary, but they really don't. They want to win, and it doesn't really matter all that much who it is, they just want the best chance to win. I think it less about principle and more about winning.

If it wasn't about just winning, Bernie Sanders would be getting a lot more support. Maybe he will as we approach the heat of the primary season. I have yet to hear a single person on this board say they are all in on Hillary, yet she is inevitable. There is a disconnect there. Power > Principle. Like I said. There are great comparisons to be made with Tricky Dick.

Ill vote for the best candidate. There are plenty of people who vote on principle.

Hillary has much more support outside of this board than she does on this board. It's nonsense to equate the board with the rest of the world.

There are plenty of people, on this board and outside of it, who will vote for Hillary in the general because her opponent will have an R beside his name. Period.

Well yeah. And there are plenty of people who will vote for the R in the general because his/her opponent will have a D beside his/her name.

Wrangor was talking about the primary, which is why his point doesn't make sense. Nobody here I've seen is voting for Hillary in the primary.

If in an Adalai Stevenson-like moment the Libertarian Party nominates Gary Johnson again, voting Libertarian this time would be the best third party vote since the Bull Moose party was on th ballot.

You could not be more wrong. If Rand Paul is nominated, I will vote republican. I don't see myself voting for any of the others. I will almost surely vote Libertarian unless the unlikely happens and Paul wins the nomination. I am done holding my nose with one hand and voting with the other.

I think Rand Paul may have the best chance to beat Hillary as I think the demographics are such that you will need someone that feels different than your standard republican to break through. In my opinion Jeb Bush or some other mainstream republican has no chance to win. I fully expect the Republicans to nominate Jeb or someone who thinks and looks a lot like him. In that case, I really do not care who wins between Jeb and Hillary. I will not vote for either of them.

I don't particularly dislike Hillary but she doesn't really align with my beliefs that much. She's considerably more in line with my beliefs than every single GOP nominee though.

Any GOP wannabe who has a chance of being the nominee has to chastise Trump during one of the debates. There's already an extremely narrow electoral college path for the GOP and several Western swing states with large Latino populations are must win. Can't let Trump's comments slide without comment.

Copyright Mittens Romney 2012

I find the Romney-haters a curious lot. Mitt Romney is one of the most accomplished people to have ever run for the office of President of the United States. Bush 41 had a better pedigree in 1988, but other than him, who's even a close second? I get that he doesn't vote in favor of your policies (and therefore he must be a stupid, mean OWG), but what hasn't he actually done that you're looking for in a candidate?

They risk angering their base. Trump vaulted to #2 in the polls. Now you can argue that was despite his comments about Mexicans or because of his comments about Mexicans. Republicans also don't want to risk pissing off a "$9 billion" potential donor.

I don't really get people ripping on Romney either. He was a smart dude who was just out of touch with lower and middle class America

He lacked the common touch (which I guess we can all look forward to having back with Mrs. Dead Broke in a few years), but George W. Bush beat Al Gore almost only because he was the cooler, more relatable guy. So much for all of that.

P.S. I think Hillary is going to win. God help me if Dook wins a title when she's in the White House. The image of her presenting a Natty to Ratface might just be too much for my heart to endure.
