BBall Recruiting Thread 2k16- SJM, Washington, Childress & Mitchell sign NLIs; 2017?

I'm on the #vibes train right up until it goes careening off a cliff. I'm excited for the meltdown either way.

The Duke meltdown is going to be epic. I have a few close friends who still believe he is going to announce on Halloween in Durham. #sadpanda

Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.

There are still more than a dozen five-star prospects still uncommitted as we near early signing day. Over the next few months, we will take an in-depth look at each player’s recruitment -- starting with the ones expected to make decisions soon.

Harry Giles

6-foot-9 | Power Forward

Winston-Salem, North Carolina | Oak Hill Academy (Virginia)

No. 1 overall (No. 1 PF)

Recruitment so far

Wake Forest -- Official visit: September 19

Kansas -- Official visit: October 9

Kentucky -- Official visit: October 16

Duke -- Official visit: October 30

The secret has been out for several years that Harry Giles would be an elite recruit. That thought was cemented when Mike Krzyzewski, John Calipari and Roy Williams all watched Giles at an 8 a.m. game in Hampton, Va. -- in the spring of his freshman season. His recruitment hasn’t slowed down since then, and four schools still remain on his list after Giles ended up canceling visits to North Carolina. Giles is expected to make his decision during the early signing period (Nov. 11-18).

Favorite: Duke

The Blue Devils have been considered the front-runner to land Giles for a long time now, and that sentiment really hasn’t changed too much. In fact, the connection only got stronger over the summer, when Jayson Tatum (No. 2) -- one of Giles’ best friends -- committed to Krzyzewski’s program. Duke has been involved as long as any other school, and it’s been clear that Giles was their primary target in what the Blue Devils have been hoping will be an elite class. Giles will fit in and start at whatever school he chooses, but there’s also a clear spot for him in Duke’s 2016-17 lineup. Amile Jefferson and Marshall Plumlee are gone, and Giles can play alongside freshman Chase Jeter because their offensive games complement each other effectively.

Sleeper: Wake Forest

Most elite recruits have some combination of Duke, Kansas and Kentucky on their lists. But Wake Forest isn’t normally involved with five-star prospects. With that said, Danny Manning has really boosted the Demon Deacons’ recruiting since he took over as head coach, and he made sure he got in the mix for Giles right away. Wake Forest is Giles’ hometown school, and while transferring to Oak Hill Academy in Virginia doesn’t help the Demon Deacons’ chances, Manning hasn’t backed off in his pursuit. Working in Wake Forest’s favor -- aside from Manning’s reputation with big men -- is the fact it has a commitment from Brandon Childress, Giles’ former high school teammate at Wesleyan (North Carolina). Giles would immediately be the biggest story in Wake Forest basketball since Chris Paul.

Contender: Kentucky

Kentucky being involved with the No. 1 prospect in the country doesn’t come as much of a shock to anyone, and Calipari has remained in heavy pursuit of Giles despite people thinking of Giles as a Duke lean. Kentucky does already have two power forward commitments in five-star Wenyen Gabriel (No. 23) and high four-star Sacha Killeya-Jones (No. 31), as well as New Zealand native Tai Wynyard, who is expected to enroll during the winter. Can Calipari work his magic and pull a rabbit out of his hat with Giles? He visited Lexington during Big Blue Madness, which is bound to make an impression, but Kentucky is playing catch-up to Duke heading down the stretch.

In the mix: Kansas

The Jayhawks have gotten off to a relatively slow start in the 2016 class, but they are still involved with a myriad of five-star prospects. Giles is among them, but Bill Self and his staff are likely fourth in this group. The Jayhawks have prioritized other big men in this class more so than Giles, including Marques Bolden (No. 20) and Jarrett Allen (No. 19), while they also have a commitment from Mitchell Lightfoot (No. 99) and have been in pursuit of Schnider Herard (No. 68). With all that said, it’s fun to imagine a frontcourt tandem of Giles and freshman Cheick Diallo or Giles and freshman Carlton Bragg. Kansas will likely get a five-star prospect to commit in 2016, but it probably won’t be Giles.

this really is the only way to go. embrace the #vibes and the insanity no matter what happens. if satan wins and this place becomes a ghost town that's the worst possible outcome.

My JGray jersey is in the closet. Might have to start wearing it around to generate #vibes.

Those may have been the words. They deff don't mind telling the casual wake fans they plan to play at Wake. I just hope the recruiting process hasn't changed that viewpoint.

As many times as I have talked to Harry he always seemed to hate UNC and Duke. It's almost strange to see another Wake fan jump shark senior year for the Devils.

Funny, Wake fans think he grew up a Wake fan, UNC fans think he grew up a UNC fan. And both sides are so insistent that they are right about it.

Love it. Let the record reflect that the NIT Finals that year was between VT and ND with the Hokies winning in OT. That has been the high point for them even now (given that the NCAA only took 1 team per conference back then).

There's really nothing to argue here. Giles was quotes saying his dream school was Wake. Giles grew up going to many of our home games. UNC can't claim either.

unc fans are now, and always have been, delusional. it's going to be tough for wake to pry him away from coach k. i am still hearing those rumors about this weekend.

What's more telling is that duke fans don't make the same argument. They believe that their assistant coach manipulated him when he was on painkillers in a vulnerable state in the hospital. Pretty telling thought process.

He's on record saying that he's a Wake fan, not sure what's so hard to understand about that.

But that's the thing. They would definitely say there's a lot to argue. If you went to InsideCarolina, they and their insiders will tell you that Harry grew up a UNC fan, that most of his direct family are UNC fans, that he always planned to go to UNC before the NCAA issues happened. And they will say it with the same conviction this board says all that about Harry and Wake.

Oh wow, so since they both say it with the same level of conviction, they must both be true... Makes you wonder!
