General Election Thread: Two Weeks Out

No. It'll take the better part of a decade or so to get that out of their system. I mean, I'd vote for Weld or Huntsman over Hillary, but the chances are slim to none that 1 of those guys gets nominated next time. The best Pubs can hope for is there isn't someone like Trump around in 4 years who captures the imaginations of those Reagan Dems like he has done, and someone like Haley, Ryan or Daniels beats back the challenge from the Christian Right guy, either Pence or Cruz.

The GOP is ripe for an alt-right takeover. The Religious Right and remaining Tea Partiers are still in the mix as well. There's not enough Pubs left for a reasonable candidate to thrive.

I really hope we see something awful on a grocery list he sent his wife. Something like Mountain Dew. #publicschoolfilth

While I don't necessarily disagree, who will be the candidate to execute said alt right takeover? I'm not seeing that person at the moment. Of course, I didn't see Trump and Sanders coming either.

Birdman, I still believe she is.

Like if Mark Cuban ran for POTUS I would be pretty interested. That's the type of outsider that we need. Not whatever Trump is.

Doubt that Cuban is a HRC true believer, but will still be a little tricky to take her head on in 2020 after having endorsed her this cycle. Both major parties are deeply flawed, but the GOP is in more immediate need of reinventing itself. Chance that HRC shits the bed and the GOP may surprise and nominate a winning ticket in 2020, so 2024 may be too late for Cuban to restructure the GOP. Dole/Kemp were both good guys, but became sacrificial lambs in 1996. Would truly suck if an excellent GOP ticket like Daniels/Haley lost in 2020. Much better for a clown ticket like Pence/Cruz to get crushed in 2020 and Cuban runs as a Weld style socially moderate 'Pub in 2024.

Milo.

Seriously though, I could see Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) running for office as a moderate Republican and winning.

Recent polls show that Trump is basically polling at the same numbers as in the primaries a firm 30% support. Most moderates republicans and the like have jumped ship along with their republican representatives. There's a reason those politicians did what they did, they have their own internal polls and knew what the aftermath would be. Even some evangelicals are denouncing trump now. That magical pivot never happened and doesn't look like it's going to happen or that there's even time for it.

Trump, and his supporters, defiant in blue-collar Pennsylvania

Trump repeated attacks Monday night that he made in the debate 24 hours earlier, promising to have a special prosecutor investigate Hillary Clinton if he wins, and questioning Clinton’s private speech excerpts released by WikiLeaks. He also suggested that the election could be “stolen” in Philadelphia.

“I just hear such reports about Philadelphia,” he said. “We have to make sure this election is not stolen from us.”

"The inner cities are terrifying and you'll probably get shot but also you should go into the city and stare down voters."

We didn't see Trump four years ago. I'm guessing it will either be another wealthy non-politician or someone coming out of the right wing media.

Bullshit

I never understand why people care about tax returns being released

Didn't really see an answer to this while skimming back through the thread.

I think it's two-fold: 1) to see the actual income the major candidates have and 2) to see the tax burden and charitable contributions the major candidates have. In the specific case of Trump the reason it is such a big issue is because he has consistently claimed to be a great philanthropist and businessman, so people want to see how much money he's actually bringing in (and has brought in) and how much money he's actually donated personally to charity. Now, we have a pretty good idea that the latter is very minimal due to reporting efforts of Fahrenthold of the Washington Post (has called over 200+ charities who have claimed Trump personally gave money or Trump/someone for his campaign claimed he personally gave money to and revealed exactly one personal donation over the past six years) and I expect that he isn't making that much personal annual income (far less than he wants you to believe) nor is he paying very much in taxes.

All of this is a pretty good indication of why Trump will not release his tax returns and it's comical that he and Pence continue to peddle this fiction of "Trump will release the returns when the IRS audit ends." Of course nobody knows the extent of the audit, when it began, when it ends, and I suspect it will never "end" at all.

So, she is one of those self loathing closeted homosexuals like Hastert or Larry Craig working publically to suppress gays while hiding her secret desires, except one who has a secret arrangement with her husband. Got it.
