Woods was a 4* on Scout. 3* on 247, 2* on ESPN and a 3* on Rivals.
247 composite had him at 331
ESPN had him as #86 SG with 2 stars
Can't find anything that suggests either SJM or Woods were consensus top 100 guys of that Woods, JC, or Melo were anywhere close (though we clearly don't have final rankings in Melo's case).

Do recruits ever take official visits after committing? I known it's common in football.
It's not very common in basketball. But Brandon Childress did that here and Melo Eggleston is taking his official visit to Wake this weekend after committing in April.
If you meant officials to other schools than the one they are committed to, then no that doesn't happen in basketball without decommitting first.

No one is saying consensus. In many. many years and speaking with many many, many recruiters, the two answers I most hear regarding the differences between guys at #60-150 are laughs and how many times people get to see the players.
JC is perfect example of this. He wasn't a great player until early in senior year. It's damn near impossible for a player to go from not being ranked to being Top 100. It rarely happens. People have too much invested in the rankings and don't go to see players who aren't ranked and not playing at HS powerhouse.
Going from nowhere to 4* on ESPN is huge leap.
The main competition will be Kansas and NC State.
