Doral Moore

Sometimes you watch 2 guys playing a similar position and the guy coming off the bench is a better basketball player than the guy who is starting.

In the NBA people talk about a guy leading your second unit. Often that guy is slightly better than one of the starters.

This works well particularly when your sixth or seventh best player plays the same position as your fifth best player Your second group has a leader who is starter quality playing with them, and usually there isn't that big a drop between five, six and seven on a decent team. Popovich and the Spurs did this with Manu Ginobli. He was better than some of the Spurs starters, but Pop brought him off the bench to lead the second unit and really crush other team's second groups.

He floats because Wilbekin ans Brandon are usually getting beaten. Arians is a bit better but often has problems.

I think his problem on D sometimes is he tries to help too much.

He may think that this is why he's doing it, but watch him tonight a bit off the ball. He tends to watch ball instead of his man, and that leads to easy drive and kicks, especially when his defender is in the corner.

I think he has a fair amount of mental lapses out there. He makes up for some of it with his freakish athleticism, but still is caught out of position a lot.

I have been a bit disappointed that the mental lapses haven't been reduced this year. Love his physical talent and confidence but you would hope solid coaching and hard work would limit the mental errors.

Taking out the NW game, he's averaging 1.2 turnovers a game. I would say this proves his "mental lapses" have been reduced quite a bit.

I was typing up a longer post on this, but yes, this.

The NU game sticks out because he had 9 and that was pretty awful, but the other 8 games he has combined for 10 total turnovers.

Despite the 9 turnovers he also still has a 56:19 ratio, which is nearly 3:1. Pretty damn good.

Freakish athleticism? Seems pretty extreme.

Through 10 games last year he had one game with 0 or 1 turnovers. 42 total.

Through 9 games this year, he has 6 games with 0 or 1 turnovers. 19 total.

Assists, rebounds, and field goal percentage all improved. With the whole team being much improved and the pretty dramatic improvement in shot selection, I think his bad choices just stand up more. He's averaging 13/6/3 and has had one bad game.

Seems crazy to me to say he hasn't improved and that his mental mistakes haven't been reduced.

7 maybe? I don't know. He has great size and I'm sure can run fast. I don't really see much explosion out of him though. Vert seems good but not super. Granted I haven't watched a ton of us. He doesn't jump off the screen to me though.

He has had several explosive plays to try to dunk the ball this year. The one against Coastal comes to mind on the fast break.

I would rate him an 8 or so. He has pretty good athletic ability.

Yes, I agree. I have been harsh on Craw but only because I think we have two potential NBA players on our current roster: Collins and Craw. And Craw needs a lot of upgrades to his game for him to make it. Collins seems on the path to be given the opportunity to figure out his role in the NBA while on a 3-year contract so kudos. The way Craw is going right now (with a lot of time to figure it out, 2 1/2 years), he is going to get one training camp to figure out his NBA role. If he turns his on court adrenaline and desire into focus then he too may get a multiple year contract to find his role. But he's not there yet.

I said that freakish was probably strong. Thanks for your concern though bud.

The point of the post was that he has the athleticism to make up for some of his mental mistakes on the defensive side of the ball, and that has saved him a few times this season.

i don't think BC is a good defender yet because he takes bad angles and is not very good at handling pNr's and although he's athletic, his lateral quickness is just average. His height/weight/length at the position are all ++, if he develops better defensive fundamentals he'd be a very good college defender. i think he overrates his own athleticism a bit leading to bad habits. he's quick straight line but he seems not to be able to stay in front of quick guards because of how he crowds them. he can jump but i'd say he's merely above average, not spectacular, but he's constantly trying spectacular dunks.

I think Crawford and Collins may be slightly above average athletes compared to NBA players.

Doral has the potential to be a great defender. He's not close yet.

JC is our best defender. Bryant is our second best defender. The rest of the rotation is far behind these three. Surprisingly. Dinos may have improved enough to be next on the list.

I think you're right. At the expense of maybe losing some of his outside stroke, he's really impressed me with his improved rebounding and seemingly improved defense. I think he's is strong enough to defend most of the ACC big's that we'll face, but will continue to be made a fool out of when he's trying to guard a smaller/quicker forward.

If that is the case it says a lot about our overall defensive deficiencies. I actually think Woods and Childress show potential defensively at times. Woods looks like he is 30 years old but he is just a sophomore.

I love Brandon's toughness, but he's a terrible defender at this point. He needs to work on his lateral ability. He also gets faked very easily. His balance is really bad.
