Can we all agree that a team takes on the mentality/personality of their HC. In the 2+ years Manning has been here I have observed 2 main traits
(1) he is very passive
- doesn't fight for his players when "phantom" fouls are called against them (I'm not saying that he always needs to get in a ref's face, but at least pull them aside and say something)
- doesn't call timeout when a team starts to go on a run against us
- we are not agressive on defense on either defending a player one on one (ie, see FSU, Hamilton always has his players play aggressive defense) or rebounding (ie, see Villanova, a much smaller team destroyed us on the boards)
(2) Doesn't know how to win a close game
- Remember all of those games we lost in conference play 2 years ago in the last minute
- During conference play he is 5-17 in games decided by 6 points or less, includes OT games. This doesn't include games like today, ones that were winnable, but had a late game meltdown that we were not able to overcome. I know his record in close games is better if you include non-conference games, but should we really be struggling to beat teams like UNC-G & Rutgers on the last possession?
Personally, I don't think he will ever stop being a passive coach. We are who we are. I am more worried about his ability to win close games. The latter is a direct result of coaching. Furthermore, at times he looks completely lost at times out there.
