The Lawfare Podcast, Special Edition: The State of Things Today

Over the past 24 hours, the Financial Times reported that Russian lobbyist Rinat Akhmetshin has testified before Robert Mueller's grand jury. Politico carried the news that the Mueller team is cooperating with the New York Attorney General to investigate Paul Manafort. And the Wall Street Journal broke still a different story: that the President's lawyers have provided memos to the Special Counsel arguing that the president cannot commit obstruction of justice and questioning Jim Comey's credibility. In the midst of this blizzard of news, Shane Harris and Paul Rosenzweig joined me and Susan Hennessey to discuss the recent developments.

For those who are wondering what to make of the state of things today, here's our best effort to bring you up to speed.

Well it looks like this and the new Pod Save America podcast are going to get me through my work shift later tonight.

You guys are going to be so bummed.

What would you consider to be a smoking gun?

I'd think a libertarian would be horrified by even the hints of corruption in the Trump government.

The best part about this is that the President's family and campaign staff met directly with Russians for the express purpose of getting dirt on Sec. Clinton, yet knowell acts like there is no evidence of wrongdoing.

At least sailor has some panache. knowell is just sad.

Whelp, it's Friday. What groundbreaking revelation will we get today!

Not groundbreaking but definetely something that makes you want to bang your head against a wall.

I'm confused. Is Trump for or against leaking? Can a trump supporter clarify for me?

Assange: One of the earliest to play the Trump fiddle, and he may be the Charlie Daniels of them all. Fortunately for Assange and Putin, they have the benefit of being thousands of miles away from Trump, so they're not likely to get caught laughing behind his back like all of the other people that have fallen out of favor with him over the past 10 months.

Ignoring the ramifications of Trump endorsing the actions of a person like Assange, it would almost be worth it to watch Assange turn on him once he has used him up.
