Possible Wake Forest Coaching Candidates Analysis

We don’t know what the buyout is and doesn’t the hiring school usually pay it out? Could be trying to do UB a solid by upping the buyout figure some of he knows he’s gone after this season. Gives him more bargaining power on his base too.

That's my guess.

Let me get this straight. Mussellman (who went to the Sweet 16 last year) and Matta (championship game and final four appearance) aren't top candidates while Buzz (who hasn't won an NCAA game at VaTech in 4 years is a top candidate.

Yeah. A current P5 coach with a long track record of success is a top coach.

Oats isn’t paying the bigger buyout. Whoever hires him is. That’s not a problem at all.

I think other coaches have done thing before leaving as well. It’s like a nice going away present. Buffalo will get a nice payday and then just hire an assistant for less than they were paying Oats.

This is Beard's 4th year as a head coach. I'm not doubting he's a top candidate. The notion that Musselman or Matta are not is questionable.

You don't think Musselman and Matta have more question marks than Beard or Williams?

Musselman and Oats have like zero question marks if you can get them to your school. Matta, maybe. But Matta was waiting for the right opportunity, now that UCLA and Arizona may be open, his back sounds like it's starting to feel a lot better.

Musselman is a failed NBA coach clawing his way back at a Mountain West school. Of course Beard and Buzz are better prospects. They are P5 guys who have kept climbing the ladder.

Being a failed NBA coach isn't necessarily a negative on the college level. Pitino, Calapari, Lon Kruger, Leonard Hamilton, Fred Hoiberg are all failed NBA coaches.

FWIW, Musselman to WF would make little sense. He coached at the professional level from 1989 to 2012. He was then an assistant at Arizona State and LSU before he got the Nevada job in 2015. He has done a great job there, but his formula there would not work at WF. On his roster, he has one player with meaningful minutes that was recruited as a HS player and that player is a freshman that averages 10 minutes a game. The remaining 8 players in the regular rotation all transferred to Nevada.

In the ACC, you can fill a spot with a transfer, but you can't get very far building an entire team that way.

Finally, Buzz seems like a super-hot commodity to us because he was hired on the same day as Manning and has massively outperformed him at a school with less of a basketball tradition and less resources committed to the sport. Think Buzz is a good coach. Not sure he is a great coach. That said, wish WF had a good coach right now.

Pilch's comparison is totally apples and oranges. As Pilch said, Musselman coached in the NBA/pros for two decades before sitting on a college bench. The other coaches Pilch used as comparison were very successful college coaches before failing in the NBA and returned to be successful college coaches as would be expected.

I don't think going from Marquette to VT is climbing the P5 ladder.

Going from Marquette to VT was literally climbing into the P5.

Umm, no. Both if those guys have question marks.

Looking at this more...it's not even lateral. Marquette clearly the better job. He moved on because there were some anti-Buzz feelings there at the end of that last season he was with them.

Also may have had doubts about the new Big East's long-term viability -- it was only a year old at that point. It's proven itself in the subsequent years

All coaches have question marks. Big East is a fine basketball conference (obviously - they have Nova) but they're always going to be behind the ACC and Big 10 top to bottom.
