Ukraine is game to you?

Not sure they can ever totally ditch the dollar, but not surprising at all to see China and Russia have sought alternate methods of transaction settlement.

Russia and China signed a treaty that year to use their national currencies when they trade.

Right. But what specifically prompted them to make a treaty at that time? Just the steady beat of sanctions?

Seems risky to link the declining ruble and the (manipulated) yuan like that.

When you are shocked to hear that Russian soldiers are having difficulty going to war with people who look just like they do, remember this -

When someone goes “Uh…With all due respect…uh” there’s like a 40% chance racism will follow.

It’s been a little disgusting hearing how people are reacting to following a modern war through social media when there have been multiple wars being fought through the Middle East, Africa, and West Asia for the past 2 decades. The Yemeni Civil War has been waging for 8 fucking years, and the whole time America has been providing arms and military tech to the Saudis while they commit war crimes against the Iranian supported Houthis, whom we are literally starving and killing with blockades and sanctions.

You're contradicting yourself now. You just said it was a difference in circumstances, not about race. And plenty of people who aren't Chinese were victims of anti-China backlash as well because Americans have trouble identifying some as Chinese rather than of many other Asian ethnicities.

Offering multiple plausible explanations, which are not mutually exclusive, is not contradicting myself. You’re trying too hard.

So it if I said race and ethnicity are a factor and you agree race and ethnicity are a factor, what’s your disagreement with me?

gets me heated

we're gonna need to start confining all race talk to one thread.

palma wants to ban critical race theory

If you're Russia, yes. If you're China, the desire (and will of the "long" game) to lessen the dollar's dominance globally.

Dominant currencies have never survived btw. Some day (likely a long time away) the dollar will be replaced. The answer is by what and when? It won't be the yuan and it sure as hell won't be the ruble unless one of those countries take over the world militarily. It may be it just becomes less dominant. And, again, I think we're a long way off from the dollar being supplanted by anything - as long as the US Navy remains the most powerful in the world and can dictate and protect global shipping. We are, however, doing our level best to completely devalue our currency. Over 40% of all dollars in circulation have been printed since the pandemic began. That is both insane and unsustainable. And historically self-devaluation is a large factor in why dominant currencies falter. In a relative sense, however, it isn't like the Euros have not been doing the same thing.

ETA - It is risky. But if you're Russia also keep in mind that dealing in USD is also really risky. You settle transactions in dollars you have to deal with US banks. And if US banks on Monday are suddenly told to not settle X Y or Z class of transactions with Russian entities then you are really screwed (as is your trading partner).

If sky news is right, this just moved a whole lot closer to the we’re all gonna die territory.
